(AP Five Spantab Insurgent airplanes bombed tht government-held city today, killing 12 peraons and wound ing a acore. Three pursuit ships guarded the bombers during the raid, the first on Cuenca, this eastern front city, slnoe the civil war began. Government officers said an Insur gent drive westward toward Cuenca province had been stopped because of lack of roads to permit quick troop concentrations. By the Associated Press Warplanea of unstated nationality bombed the British tanker British Corporal and the Italian steamer Monglola today off the coast of Al geria, near war-torn Spain. The tanker reached Algiers safely, with none of her crew Injured. The Italian ship, bombed a iew hours later, flashed an SOS telling of the attack. Neither ship was bound for a Spanish port. The monoplanes bombed the tank er from 5:20 a. m. to 6:15 ft. m.. dropping 40 projectiles. None of them made a direct hit, but the wireless apparatus was damaged by concus sion and the tanker was sprayed with shrapnel. Then, when the crew tried to take to the boats, the planes sprayed the decks with machine gun fire. Beyond the SOS, nothing was heard from the Italian ship for sev eral hours. Both Spanish government and In surgent planes are based within strik ing distance of the scene of the bombings. In the war area. Ray Craft, a newspaper man, has just returned from a ten months' trip abroad during which time he visited the British Isles, France Switzerland and Italy, as weH es In northern Africa. Highlight of his experience was several months spent In Algeria, dur ing which time he went far Into the Sahara desert and lived for some weeks with native tribesmen. While In Africa, Craft amused himself with a study of black magic and the tribal laws and customs of the Arabs, Craft worked his way across the Atlantic - on a Nodweglan freighter from Grays Harbor to Scotland via the Panama canal. After visiting In Scotland and EncWnd, be spent two months In Paris and then proceeded to Algiers, where he lived for eome time. He returned by way of Italy, Switzerland and France.
