From Nebraska Mr. and Mrs. George S. Copelsnd of Beatrice, Neb , arrived In Medford early this week to visit with Dr. and Mrs. R. M. Hood. Mrs. Copeland and Mrs. Hood are sin ters and the two families are enjoying a reunion seeing southern Oregon's scenic beauties together. The Cope lands expect to remain until the lat ter part of the week. Grass Fire Chemical crew of the fire department wac called at 3:30 yesterday afternoon to put out a grass blaze at 11th and South Front streets. The fire was set under per mit to burn excess grass but got beyond control and Ignited some old tar paper which sent black smoke billowing high Into the air. Th blaze was extinguished without dam age. . AGED AUTO VICTIM IS IDENTIFIED BY SHERIFF'S OFFICE The aged hitch-hiker who was killed instantly laat Saturday night on the Pacific tugnway near Gold Hill when struck by an automobile, was Identified thla morning as Rob ert Dickey. 83. County Coroner Prank Perl reported. Identification was made through a telephone call from the sheriff of Del Norte countv, California, who told the coroner that he had purchased a stage ticket for Dickey recently, and that the latter had traveled by Grey hound bus from Crescent city, Calif., to Grants Pass. It was also learned today that Dickey had spent the night of June 1 and 3 In the city Jail here. Say Sloneker, city officer, said that Dick ey had come to the station and re quested a place to sleep, saying that he was on his way to Klamath Palls to find work. Ha told city police that he had been living at the poor farm In Albany. Previously, Dickey told the police he had resided near Baker and had been a resident of Oregon for 60 or 60 years. City po lice took care of Dickey for two days. Del Norte county sheriff told the coroner that Dickey had been around Crescent City for some time, doing odd Jobs and barely aurvlvlng. and that the old fellow had been helped several tlmea by the sheriff's office. It was considered unlikely that Dickey had any relative. County Coroner Perl said that Dickey would be burled either today or tomorrow morning In the I. O. O. The season's total of 1.439.000 head docked to date Is 8 per cent under laat year's figure, and represents 78 per cent of the breeding ewea on hand January 1, compared with 84 per cent in 1935 and 1936. The number of breeding ewes, esti mated at 1.822,000. waa 30.000 less than the year before. Washington's lamb crop was estl mated at 629.900 head, about the same aa last year, and represent ing bo per cent of the breeding ewes compared with 93 per cent In 1936.
