They failed to qualify, Hammond by eeven troxM and Clark by 10. but they bare no regret. They snot their golf, and though It wasn't quite good enough, they have no aUbl'a. ."What beat ua more than any-i thing else. X believe,- Hammond aald today, "were the water hazards on of Portl and golf club. On the 10th hole on my first round. I overshot the green and landed tn e lake. I took a aeven on the bole.' Over the 36-bole medal route, Ham mond shot an 83-75 for a total 157. It took 150 or less to qualify. Clark carded an 83-78 for a total 160. Moe Sensational Don Moe, Hammond said, was the sensation of the tournament. He strung together 30 straight pars, and when he had completed the 36 holes, had a score of 71-70 for a total of 141. He was tbe low scorer. Scott Mllllgan followed on Moe 'a heels with a 143 total. Comparing the Portland Golf club course with the Rogue Valley, Ham mond stated the Portland layout was slightly tougher because of the many water hazards. "You have to be much stralghter off the tee at Portland than you do here," he ex plained. However, with the exception of the water hazards, the Rogue Valley course probably would be the tough er, he said, because of the difference In size of the greens. Portland has much, the larger greens. Hammond made his tour of the 36 holes with Douglas Nlcol of the Port land Oolf club, who turned In the same score as did Hammond. George Kill of the Alderwood Country club, where the national amateur will be staged, played with Leland Clark, and shot an even 150 to qualify. Memorial ' Interests Hammond said there was a great deal of interest in Portland In the coming Chandler Egan . dedication program to be held In Medford Au gust 22. Several golfers and fans, he aald, were planning to attend from Portland and watch Jimmy Thomp son. Lawson Little, Harry Cooper and Horton Smith perform. The national amateur qualifying round which Hammond and Clark entered was the first such tourna ment held in Oregon in many years. It was also the first the two local golfers had ever entered. With so much at stake, It was only natural that Medford 's pair of aces should be slightly nervous at first. "Yes. I was a, little shaky during the first round when I took an 83," H ammond ami led. Discussing the national tourney in August, Hammond said the largest gallery to ever follow the slmon pures was expected. It will be the second time In history the tourna ment has been staged on the Pacific coast, and Portland is gradually be Coming "golf mad," he said . . RUTH NEFF DIES, PORTLAND Mrs. Ruth Meff of the Jacksonville highway died in Portland at 9:18 this morning, according to word re ceived here. She was the wife of J. Asher Neff, Medford mall carrier who was with her at the end. Mrs. Neff went to Portland a month, ago to attend the annual Apostollo Faith mission camp.
