In Air Corps Kenneth C. Rhoads,1 son of Mrs. H, P. Burleson of Phoenix, was enlisted yesterday In the United States army air corps for service at Hamilton field, San Rafael, Cal. He was accepted tentatively for enlist ment here on July 13 and subse quently passed his final qualifying examinations at San Francisco. He chose the army air corps. . He la the first passen ger booked by United out of Medford for the new sleeper connection. 9 O OF FIRE HAZARDS BY CHIEF ELLIOTT Medford residents were requested by Fire Chief Roy Elliott today to burn all rubbish and dry grass with out further delay, permits for burn ing may be procured bjr telephoning lire headquarters, 840. "We are entering the serious fire season now and all hazards should be eliminated." Chief Elliott said. "Medlord people have always coop erated with the department in firo prevention and we are sure they will thia time." Grass, which is becoming danger ously high ln many Instances, should be cut sway from all houses and buildings, stacked in a safe place and burned now, the chief said. Accum ulated rubbish, always a hazard be cause of spontaneous Ignition, should also be burned or otherwise dis posed of. he said. All houses and buildings should be inspected also for other fire hazards, the chief stated, pointing out that piled sawdust and other Inflammable material present a constant danger. Such material, he said, should be stored in places and In such a way as to eliminate the possibility of spontaneous ignition, cause of many fires in the summer. Attics, cellars and closets should be ventilated, he added, and electric wiring should be Inspected. "The best fire protection is pre vention," the chief emphasized. "When tt comes to prevention, we need the public's help." 1 TAX SETTLEMENT WASHINGTON, July 30. (AP) The board of tax appeals settled for $27,- 688 today 13 tax cases heard recently at Portland, Ore. They Involved defi ciencies totaling 645,578 assessed by the board of Internal revenue. The board determined the Fir Tree Lumber company. Portland, was 116.- 718 deficient In 1031, 1033 snd 1033 Income taxes. The bureau had access ed the company 926,093. Other deficiencies determined by the board and compared with bureau essessments were: The Pinnacle Packing Company, Inc., Medford, (780, (2043 .
