FIRES ON FOREST I Out for Stroll on Beach T destroyed by fire Monday night after it had been struck by lightning dur ing a severe electrical storm that swept Baker and Union counties. The loss, estimated at 135,000, was partly covered by Insurance. The building. 110 feet wide, 140 feet long and 40 feet high, waa filled with 11,000 tons of Ice. Herman White, manager of the plant, estimated that the company will save at least 5000 tons of the Ice. sufficient to carry th concern through the Icing season. A plane from Portland, piloted by L. J. Bonier, made three trips to the fire scene today from Med ford municipal airport, dropping 800 pounds of food for the firefighters and their horses on each trip. The plane made ono trip last evening. . Thhe dropping was done by Herb Heyde of the Roguo River national forest. K. P. McRcynolds, assistant for ester of the Umpqua national forest 1n charge of fire control, came to Med ford from Roseburg headquarters last night to arrange for a patrol flight over the Umpqua to locate fires that could not be spotted defin itely from the lookouts. Thomas A. Oulbertson, Jr., manager of the Med ford municipal airport, was to fly him today, but the flight waa post poned until tomorrow because of fog In the Umpqua gullies. More then 00 fires were caused by lightning In the Umpqua forest. Several heavy showers fell In Med ford yesterday afternoon, the precipi tation as measured by the weather bureau being .30 of an Inch from 6 a. m. Saturday to 5 a. m. today.
