Estimates Place Total Yield
Near 77,000,000 Bushels
Equal or Better Than
Bumper Crop of 1936
Br ARTHUR E. Dl'ROF.S
(Associated Press Staff Writer.)
Wheat crop prospects Jumped today
i farmers prepared tor the great
golden harveat In the far west's "bresd
basket."
Reports from grain dealers and
farmers In Washington. Oregon and
Idaho placed an average estimate ot
77,000.000 bushels on the 1937 crop,
about' equal to last years bumper
harvest.
The forecasts were almost a com
plete reversal ot those made a month
ago.
Heavy rainfall during the past two
weeks accounted for the current good
outlook.
May Top Last Year.
All crop experts reported produc
tion would be "substantial"; some
even foresaw a better orop than last
year.
The average winter wheat crop was
estimated at 39.000,000 bushels, .com
pared with 91,800,000 last year. The
spring crop forecast was 48.000,000
bushels, an Increase on nearly a,
000,000 over 1938.
Soma buying quarters estimated the
crop would reach 81,000,000 bushels,
with a spring crop ot 80,000,000. One
dealer aald winter wheat would be
90 percent ot normal, and spring' 80
percent of normal.
Oordon T. Shaw, one of the largest
wheat dealers n the northwest, who
made a oomplete circuit of the north
west wheat belt laat week, placed
flat estimate of 77,600,000 bushels on
the crop. ......
Spring Wheat Flourishes.
Bhaw reported "a lot of winter
wheat In dlatrlct 9 In southwestern
Washington was froren out, but
aprlng wheat prospects are excellent."
He aald the Big Bend section would
harveat Its beat crop In yeara, - both
spring and winter.
"The Spokane dlatrlct will harveat
a fair crop of winter wheat and an
excellent aprlng crop," he aald.
The Padflo Northwest Drain Deal'
era' association predicted a crop total
ing 76,000,000 bushels. The Farmers
National Grain company forecast
crop between 78.000,000 and 80,000
000 bushela. 1
Acre production was placed at
around 35 to 30 bushela.
Want No More Rain.
Shaw laid the wheat "headed out'
before the rain came, "but the mois
ture helped develop the sucker
heada." More rain Is not desired be
cause It would give the wheat low
protein content.
The northwest probably will have
the lowest wheat carryover In many
yeara between 10,000,000 and 13,
000.000 bushels, About 46,000,000
bushela of wheat wtu be shipped thla
year, dealers aald.
In Oregon, Baker, Umatilla, Union
and Wallowa counties will harveat
about 8.000,000 bushela and Ollllam
Hood River, Morrow, Sherman and
Waaoo counties about 6.600,000 bush.
all.
