To the Editor: In Sunday's Issue of the Mall Trlb une Is the following headline: "Gov ernor Charges Political Plot." Politicians want him to call to special session of the legislature. Ore gon Is noted for her great states men for making laws. Take as an Illustration the session of the last legislature. How any bunch of men. with any regard for the wishes of the j people of Oregon, could expect the average citizen to approve the gov ernor calling that bunch back there i to spend their vacation on the ex-, pense of the taxpayer. After making 338 new laws which ought to last Oregon for at least ten years. If they had concentrated on 30 worthwhile laws in place of trad ing around among themselves to get some pet Idea passed. Everyone knows what they did at the last special session. As to rais ing their salaries, I will have some thing to say on that subject In the future. I will say that 3 Is not enough and 8 Is more than the people will give them. P. J. KIRKPATRICK. Star Rt., Box 67, June 30th. Walt V. S. Cooperation MOSCOW, Thursday, July 1 . (rjp) Professor Otto J. Clear (Oootlnueo uem Page One.) unless you have a good reason. It's a map making project under the aponsorshlp of the bureau of publlo roads with the cooperation of the states. While the propect doesn't ohart the contour lines a do the geo-. logical survey maps, It marks every, thing else. It has your barn and your house. It has the golf course ' and the cemetery, general store and the sawmill. In fact, there are 67 symbols representing virtually every object the hand of man ha made. Borne of the maps are made on scsle as Urge as one Inch to the mile. They rival the military map the German made all over Franca, and which the Americans used. The ' purpose of the survey Is to lay the basis for highway planning, but the Information revealed 1 high ly valuable to other people beside the road builder or Invading armies. Naturally, the war department .Is a good customer. So ought the politi cal workers to he and the lightning rod salesmen. In carrying out the project, sur. veya are now being made In 40 state more than the geological survey, the , nation's ohlef map-maker, ha been able to map. The states match federal funds for the work. A master-planning Job, If ever there la one. It's sll been arranged by one of the conservative old-tine agen oles, the realization of dream that the roads bureau haa dreamed slnoe long before the New Deal. When the president told the news, pepermen to put on the dunce-cap for bringing up the subject of third term on hot day, he showed only little more feeling albeit cloaked In smiles than he did when he was asked about the money we'd 'pent sterilizing gold. . The reason for this I that certain groups have been raising the ery, "We can't eat gold." They might add, "epeclally when It' sterilized." Te help the deficit there Is that billion, fifty million, paid for since Decern, bar, which apparently Is good only fur what it was originally to burr under the sod.
