' Grants Pass at Rose burg. Age-old blttet rivalry between ath- ietlc teams of 'Medford and Ashland will blaze anew here Sunday when Manager Mike Balkovlck Craters and the Llthlans of Manager Hall unllm ber against each other In a Southern Oregon league ball game slated to start at 3:30 p. m, at the turf high achool field. It will be brilliant Bob Hardy, ace southpaw of the Ashland hurling staff versus young Larry Pepper, Med- foid pitcher with the amazing curve tall. 'And fans of both cities, at fever pitch for the Impending clash, figure It will be the sweetest ball game of , tne year. j That both clubs have been removed from the first-half pennant race which has only two more games to go, has made little difference In the desire both clubs have to knock over the other. There Is no team Ashland would rather beat than Medford, and so far aa Medford la concerned. It would rather give Hardy and the Lithlans a thumping than win ten pennants. Strictly according to statistics, the j Llthlans have the more powerful of fensive punch. Cliff McLean, In two games, is clouting .500; Ted Schopf, shortstop, and Arba Ager, third base man, are both hitting ,333; and Dar ren Leavens, cunterflelder, has a mark Of .318. For Medford, only Dick Hoffman, with .357, and Manager Balkovlck. I with .300, are within the charmed ' circle, although Mai Stlne, with .2801 and Dick Lewis, with .361, are consid ered strong at the plate. Both clubs Bave been hampered in workouts this week by rain and wet ! grounds, but both will present their strongest lineups, to date. Especially will the Craters be a vastly Improved team out there. Cuke Hanklnson, si-' thougn still favoring his ankle In jured In the Roseburg game two weeks ago, will be ready to go. Russ Acheson and George Harrington will also be ready to step In, and Man ager Balkovlck la planning on using both flayers. Since returning from the University of Oregon, where he helped Bill ttayles pitch Howard Hobson's Web foots to the northern division cham pionship of the Pacific Coast confer ence, tall Bob Hardy has met with amazing success. In two games against Glendale, he has fanned 33 men and allowed only 9 hits Because of Hardy, more than anything else, Ashland is now rated one of the strongest, if not the strongest, clubs in the circuit.
