Fire Crew Called Chemical crew of the fire department was called out twice yesterday afternoon, but in each Instance there was no fire, only smoke blown back down chimneys by a strong wind. The first call, at 4:45, was to the home of Dr. L. L. Sanders 620 East Main street. Second call, at 6:15, was to the residence of Mrs. Helen Dixon, 626 West 10th street. Fire Hose Drills A team of Med ford volunteer firemen will hold hose drills near headquarters at 6:30 to night and Friday night In prepara tion for competition during the an nual convention of the Oregon Fire Chiefs' association hers June 24, 25 and 26. French and British warships In the vicinity were cleared Immediately for action. The British destroyer Bulldog, the French destroyer Fougueux and the French sloops Eplnal and Doubour dteu were lined up facing the Clecar. One hundred and stxteen refu gees from besieged Bilbao were on the Spanish ship. French authorities nsked the Spanish consul at La Rochelle to try and persuade the Cie car's men to land them. The mutiny broke out when Com mander Enrique Margatl and Lieu tenant Vlcene Ascensl of the Clecar trlPd to land. Their sailors, apparently thinking the officers were deserting the ship, threatened them with pistols. But the officers succeeded In getting ashore under the watchful eyes of French customs officers. Wary port officials called on the FbUReux. which sped here from Brest, H. M. S. Bulldog and the French sloops, which had been cruising out side the harbor, returned to watch the Clscar. They were prepared- to bring the Spaniard's crew to order quickly, should the mutineers fire their leveled guns. WROHG MAN. Carey, passing Butler's home In the Rock Creek area near the foot of Alsea mountain, saw the house afire and went to aid him. As po lice pieced the story together. Butler apparently thought Carey wanted to wrestle with him and hit him on the head with a hammer five times. Butler fled Into the woods and Carey managed to get aid to reach a hospital. A posse of state police and sheriff's officers captured But ler about midnight. His sister, Mrs. Lee Bellman, told police Butler had been unbalanced at Intervals for eight months and that she had been threatened. .
