Mr. Rogers said that reports he bad received from poets In all parts of the state Indicated that this year's encampment would be the largest the organ izalon has ever held. "All are eager to come to Med ford and an exceptionally good encamp ment Is anticipated." Mr. Rogers stated. "I know the Medford com mittee has worked hard and Its plans and arrangements are most satisfac tory. We are delighted to have Med ford as host city." Joe E. (JP) A sentence of 13 years in the Oregon state penitentiary was Imposed In circuit court here this morning by Judge Carl E. Wlmberly upon Cor delia Hopkins, 22. of Canyonvllle. Mrs. Hopkins had pleaded guilty to a charge of Involuntary manslaugh ter, growing out of the death of her four-year-old step-daughter, Barbara Irene Hopkins, April 17. As the man slaughter law requires both fine and Imprisonment, the sentence included a fine of $2. Judge Wlmberly said In passing sentence that be had studied the case very carefully, reading the re port of physicians who conducted the autopsy, the transcript from the pre liminary examination and coroner's inquest, and the confession signed by Mrs. Hopkins. He said arriving at the penalty to be imposed he had considered the fact that the woman had pleaded guilty, the fact that there was evidently some mental dis turbance, and also the fact that the law passed by the recent legislature, i allowing time off for good behavior, ! reduces a penalty approximately one ; third. '.. Mrs. Hopkins in her confession and plea before the court, admitted strlk ; ing the child with the handle of a table knife. Blows upon the head, according to the autopsy report, re sulted fn a hemorrhage which caused ; the girl's death. Leonard Hopkins, father of the I child, was indicted by the grand Jury ! on a charge of assault and battery to which he pleaded not guilty. His : trial will start Monday. . I Baker Celebrates. OKAYS EXTENSION OF PWA TWO YEARS WASHINGTON, June 4. (AP) The house appropriations committee recommended legislation today to extend the public works administra tion for two years and authorize It to use approximately $256,000,000 for loans and grants. The measure, although making no direct appropriation from the treas ury, would renew the agency's power to use the $95,000,000 unobligated balance In Its revolving fund for grants and authorize it to sell an additional $40,000,000 of Its securi ties for this purpose. A similar proposal waa made yes terday to a senate appropriations subcommittee by Senator Hayden (D., Ariz.). ' He would have the reconstruction finance corporation cash PWA't re volving fund, so as to provide $325. 000.000 for continuing PWA on an active basis. Only projects already approved by PWA's examining division would be eligible for either loans or grants under the extension measure. The bill provide for expiration of PWA on June 30, 1939.
