Baker, New York Financier, Reported Out of Danger After Mercy Dash by Hospital Ship ABOARD CUTTER TANEY IN MID PACIFIC. May 28 p George P. Baker, one of the world's wealthiest men, was reported out of Immediate danger today after a floating ho pttal contacted the New York bank er's yacht In mld-Paclflc. Dr. D. J. Zaugg of the United States public health service boarded the yacht Viking at 3:82 a. m. (9:22 a. m E.S.T.) after a race to bring emergency aid to Baker, during which the cutter Taney was converted In mid-oceari Into a -floating hospital. Dr. Zaugg reported no immediate blood transfusion was necessary to save the 59-year-old banker from peri tonitis. He said no attempt would be made ' to transfer the chairman of the First National bank of New York from his yacht to the cutter. Dr. Zaugg will remain aboard the yacht during a 270-mlle race to Hono lulu. The cutter will convoy the yacht Into port. Flashing searchllghta of the Viking led the Taney to the yacht's side early this morning, ending the speedy mercy dash. This seems to be the main subject of private discussion in the financial district. NEW YORK. May 28. (P) Adela Rogers St. Johr? Hollywood soenarlit and newspaper writer, and her hus band, Patrick OToole, publicity man, were two of seven persons arrested on simple assault charges as a result of a fight early today outside Bill's Gay Nineties, a mid-Manhattan night club. Three men were Injured, one seri ously, in the affray, which attracted a crowd of more than 100 persons, most of them In evening clothes, three police radio cars and a hos pital ambulance. Those arrested In addition to Miss St. John and her husband were Wil liam Wright, radio commentator, who was taken to Bellvue hospital with n fractured skull; Daniel (Don) Hlg r:ina, who said he was In the pub licity department of the Columbia Broadcasting system; Henry Tannen, part owner of the club; William Walsh, a host, and Charles F. (Sail or) Grande, doorman. Cause of the fight, In which all agreed fists swung freely, was a mat ter of much dispute In the East Slst street police station, where all were 'taken. The Issue was left for de cision in Yorkvllle court today, where they were to appear. Miss St. John said she and her party had been celebrating In honor of Wright, who was to have gone to a new position In Hollywood, and decided to "top off" the evening at the night club. They were refused admittance because the house was full, Tannen said. While they were discussing the situation. Miss St. John said, someone took a swing at her. She dodged, and the battle was on. The party of four filed charges against the club employes, who tn turn filed counter-charges. The seven were released in $500 bail each. William Hlnneman, a guest of the club, provided the en tire (3,500. urer. L. H. McBee of Dallas will be the delegate to the national con clave. The convention passed a resolu tion approving formation of cooper atives to facilitate movement of crops from grower to market and to prevent losses due to strikes and other con ditions. A resolution supporting the neutrality bill lost on the ground the measures does not adequately define goods and effects eligible to foreign countrlr in time of war. Ml POLICE BEND. May 38 (AP) Bend young sters gave police, firemen and doc tors a start when they reported a playmate fell into a 48.000 gallon tank near the railroad station. The authorities drained the huge tank but there wasn't any victim. G RO CERY CLERKS TO GET PAY BOOST PORTLAND. May 28. APJ Three hundred Independent retail grocers completed an agreement with the Re tail Clerks' union today. The grocers will pay 17. 50 ft week for Inexper ienced help and 127.50 for experienced clerks. The work week will be 54 hours. A Sunday closing will go into effect on November 1. Notes. There Is talk In Texas quarters (but unconflrmable here) that aon Elliott might be persuaded to run for governor of. the largest state.
