Bunclman reportedly told the con ference that Brltau was anxious to conclude a treaty, not only to In crease Anglo-American trade but also as a first atep toward opening the channels of' world commerce and a wider understanding betweon the two nations. The Pacific ahlpplug aub-commltteo of the conference met with the board of trade and continued discussions on tho means of fighting subsidized V. 8. shipping lines In the Pacific. examination of costs of operating trans-Paclflc liners both with and without subsidies was begun. It waa considered likely that the conference would recommend a aub- stantlal subsidy to Britlih-owned lines. The Imperial shipping committee last December recommended a eub sidy of 7.600,000 jointly subscribed hv Britain. Canada, Australia and New Zealand as a weapon aglnst U. S. competition. The trial waa a quick but sensa tional one. with both the state and the defense reaching Into Walla Walla penitentiary for witnesses. The state brought John W. Owens', serving S9 years on conviction of complicity In the murder, to testify that it was Hart who actually fired the fatal shot which killed Dovery during the course of a hold-up on the night of June 19. 1925. Hart de nied this testimony in all details.
