MOUND ACE, FINED
ST. LOUIS, Mo.. May 33 (UP)
VanLlngle Mungo. ace pitcher for
the Brooklyn Dodger, nursed a black
eye and a throbbing head In his room
at the Hotel Chase here tonight, but
nevertheless cheerfully described his
side of a scrap with Jimmy Bucher.
utility lnflelder, in which chsira and
mirrors were broken and walls dam
aged. It was. he said, "a little misunder
standing." The "little misunderstanding" re
sulted in a fine of 91,000 and a three
day suspension, imposed by General
Manager John Gorman of the Dodg
ers, after a conference with club of
ficials In Brooklyn.
Gorman said the pitcher commit
ted a breach of discipline by "get
ting drunk and fighting."
The "misunderstanding" started
when Mungo entered an apartment
occupied by Woody English and Jim
my Bucher.
"I Just went down to talk to Jim
my," Mungo said. "There was noth
ing to It. We Just had a little mis
understanding, and he swung at me."
"Did you swing back?"
"Sure," said Mungo. "It wouldn't
have been a fight If I didn't. That's
how fights usually start."
Weights of the fighters:
Mungo, 210, 6 feet 2 Inches tall.
Bucher. 150, 6 feet 7 Inches tall.
In addition to the fine, suspension
and black eye, Mungo must account
to the management of the Chase ho
tel for mirrors, chairs and other Items
of wrecked furniture.
Bucher played third base In to
day's game with the St. Louis Card
inals, apparently none the worse for
the encounter. The utility lnflelder
said the $1,000 fine and suspension
should take care of Mungo. He re
fused further comment.
