PAGE SIX MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON, FRIDAY, MAY 21. 1937. Super Speller Required In Social Security File By EDDY OILMORB WASHINGTON. May 21. (AP) The social security board, which tu to keep track at 37,000.000 namea. umi out today with a filing eystem that can put the nation' beat spell ers to ahama. The board, aettlng up the wage record of the people who register for old age benefits, ran afoul of a flock of family namea that aound alike but are spelled differently. Baer, for Instance, haa 38 variations. Snyder haa 39. Bj'.ley 33, Burke 33. Lehman 18, and Kelley 14. Wrestling with the Baera, the ha rassed federal workers discovered these variations: Baar. Baare, Baear, Baere. Balar. Baler. Balr, Balre. Bayre. Balrr, Bare, Baehre, Bahar, Baehoar, Bahor. Bay or, Bayer, Bayeur. Bear, Beer. Beere. Beler, Beare, Bealr, Bealre, Belr. Belrr, Bore. Beahr, Beaher, Beher. Beyar and Beyer. Whew I Statisticians then figured out a super-phone tlo system which assem bles at one point In a huge file all names that sound similar, but are spelled differently. If the employe can't apell bla name, the board says that makes no dif ference get him to pronounce It and aend what It aounds like to Washington. The auper-speller will file It.
