WASHINGTON. May IS. (AP)
Two senstorlsl opponents of the
Roosevelt court bill suggested today
that Ambauador William E. Dodd
return from bis Berlin post.
Commenting on Dodd'a letter to
Senators Qlasa (D.-Va.) and Bulkley
(D.-Ohlo). urging support of the
court reorganisation bill because of
a, "dictatorship" threat to the United
States, Senator Van Nuya (D.-Ind.)
said:
"The ambassador has overstepped
tha boundaries of his official position
somewhat. His letter was lll-tlmed
Ill-advised, unsolicited and out of
keeping with bis function aa ambar-
aador.
May Ask Hearing.
If Dodd "continues" to make auch
charges, Van Nuys added, he will ask
through the state department that
the ambassador be "Invited back
here to appear before the senate ju
diciary, or foreign relatione commit
tee." Senator King (D.-Utah) said Dodd a
letter Indicated that he had become
"Imbued with fascism" and had dem
onatrated that he waa "not a proper
man to represent this country In Ger
many." The usual cauttoua "no comment"
waa the state departments reply to
all lnqulrlea concerning Dodd'a letter
and Its possible effect on his official
eareeer.
Dodd, a former professor of history
at the University of Chicago, was ap
pointed to the Berlin post in 1933.
Opponents of the court bill de
clared today administration leaders
had advised the president senate ap
proval of the measure was extremely
doubtful.
Claim Enough Votes.
Senate auporters, however, contend
ed they hsd enough votes to pass It,
although some said there would be
only a vote or two to apare.
Opponents claimed 83 votesor
three more than a senate majority
against the measure. The declara
tion against the blU late yesterdsy by
- Senator Shlpstead (FL.MInn.) made
' M publicly committed In opposition.
Both sides awaited the president s
return Friday.
. No one professed insids Informa
tion on what he might do. Most
discussion revolved about the Idea
of adding two. Instead of six, Judges
to the supreme court and of aubmlt
tlng a constitutional amendment to
foroe retirement at 78 years.
