Road Still Closed Diamond Lake highway Is still closed to traffic from the Junction with Crater Lake high way. Although the highway Is pass able to the Bogue river bridge, the bureau of public roads Is engaged In maintenance work on the 5 ',,3 -mile stretch and motorists are discouraged from trying to drive to the bridge. "Closed" signs are still stretched across the highway at the Junction. Painting Fire Hull Work ol re furbishing Medford fire headquarters was progressing today. Kalsomlnlng the Interior has been completed and the exterior la now being painted. Chief Roy Elliott said his aim is to have the building looking its beat for the annual convention of the Oregon Fire Chiefs association which will be held here next month. The firemen are doing the work. ... Driver Tests Ward McReynolds. state examiner, will be at Medford city hall from 8 a. m. to s p. m. Saturday to conduct written exam inations and road tests for appli cants seeking licenses or permits to operate cars or trucks. Mr. Mc Reynolds will also accept applications for the renewal of operators' licenses. All operator licenses expire on June 30. Renewal blanks may be procured now at city and state pollco head quarters, the sheriff's office and the Jackson county chamber of Com merce. The blanks, when properly filled out, may be mailed directly to the secretary of state's office ,ln Snlem or delivered to Mr. McReyn olds who will mall them and Issue an official receipt for the fee. $1. The men are practicing for competi tive drllla during the convention at the Oregon Fire Chiefs association here on June 24, 29 and 26. Last night two teams of four men .each went through the drills. Another practice will be held at fire head quarters at 6:30 next Wednesday evening, the chief announced. Later, several drills will be held each week to groom the Medford volunteers for the convention prizes, he stated. ... LoEgIng Speeded Timber cutting has been accelerated by the Pelican Bay Lumber company, It was report ed today by Karl L. Janouch, super visor of the Rogue River national forest, upon his return from the site of the logging operation northeast of Crater lake. The company Is now cutting about 300.000 board feet dally and should finish Its logging oper ations In the Rogue forest area by mid-July, Mr. Janouch said. To com plete Its contract with the forest service, the compsny Is to cut 2?, 000.000 board feet this year, about 8.000.000 having been logged to date. The cutting Is being done on a sus tained yield basis In accordance with the fixed policy of the forest service. Scenlo valuea also are being retained along the Diamond Lake highway, there being no evidence- of logging from the highway, Mr. Janouch em phasised.
