BAPTIST SPEAKER VOICES PLEA FOR PRACTICAL STAND Christians Must Face Reali ties of Modern Day, Says Reverend Britten in An nual Convention Sermon A plea for Christiana to meet the great human needs of the modern world waa voiced last night by Rev. Rodney M. Britten of Monmouth aa he delivered the annual aermon to delegates of the three-day atate Bap tist convention being held here. entitling hie address "More Than Conquerors," Rev. Britten said: "Christians must be practical: we must face the realities of modern-day life. We must stop being mediocre It la for ua to learn of and meet the great human need. Until the Chris tlan becomes vitally conscious of divine power within, he can never hope to meet the need of the world without. It la he who has conquered In the spiritual realm who Is the real conqueror." Rev. Britten la a former resident of Grants Pass and well known In the valley. He Is one of the youngest ministers In the state. Lt. Anderson Speaks -- Also addressing convention sessions yesterday was Lieut. H. W. Anderson, resident chaplain of OCO camps in the Medford district, who talked to the group on the Bible In the CCC camps.. Lieut. Anderson reviewed the success of religious services In the camps and discussed their relation to other camp activities. Outstanding event on today's pro gram will be this evenlng'a banquet which Is to be followed by mission ary address by Rev. O. L. Swanson, missionary to Assam. The suit Is based upon a three way auto accident last September at Voorhlea Crossing on the Pacific highway, when the sedan In which the plaintiff was a passenger was hurled. Steno graphic notes are being transcribed and it la expected she will sign the written confession, the attorney said. The district attorney reported no further legal action would be taken In the case until after the state ment la signed and studied. Husband Absolved. The confession, according to Comp ton. absolves the husband and father of the child of any knowledge or complicity In the crime. 'Mrs. Hopkins confessed to a grow ing dislike of her step-daughter and had urged that she be sent away," Attorney Compton reported. "She said she found she was going Into Increasing fits of rage over the child's habit of prevarication and realized that she waa treating the girl with Increasing severity. ' The father, how ever, wss quoted by her as saying that he was financially unable to send the child away and Insisted sho ; should remain, believing that all j could live happily together." Utter Will Remain With Parole Board SALEM, May o. (AP) Dr. Floyd lh Utter, who resigned several months ago as a member of the state parole board, withdrew his resignation yes terday and will remain a member of the board. Governor Martin approved the move. Utter resigned after the legisla ture failed to enact the board's new parole system. Commenting upon the action Utter said: "I have withdrawn my resignation because I feel that enactment of modern parole legislation Is vital to the state and that X can do more to accomplish this purpose by continu ing on the board."
