Black Legion Film Thrills At Rialto Lifted directly from the banner lines and news columns of the dally papers of a few weeks ago Is the thrilling melodrama "Black Legion." which opened a three-day run yes terday at the Rialto theater. This production was begun a few days after the press revealed that such a secret organization was ope rating In Michigan, and was con cluded, according to studio officials on the very day a Detroit Judge sen tenced the hooded order's officials to life imprisonment. As timely as today's newspaper, "Black Legion" gripped the interest and won the applause of deeply moved audiences at the Rialto. If It were purely a fictional story, it would have been an excellent movie. But containing, as It does, so many close parallels to the truth about the dastardly nignt-riders, it has tremendous additional power a a social document. "Motor Madness." a light, airy ro mance of speed-boat life featuring Rosalind Keith and Allen Brook, plays as the added attraction with "Black Legion." All this suffused with the glow of historic tradition and the centuries' acceptance of the mastery of Wil liam Shakespeare. That, in sum, Is the rich, rare stuff of which "Romeo a.nd Juliet." which opened yesterday at the New Craterian theater, haa been woven. From the loom of Holl ywoort s studios, with its array of creative personalities, has come a work of expression embellished with element of appeal, with mingled charm and skill, that demonstrates again the motion picture as the dominant art the best medium of narration, re creation that has yet been evolved. The perennial modernity of the love theme, and the curious capacity of the screen to make all that ever was In any yesterday a living event of today, has never been more acutely exemplified than In "Romeo and Juliet." That relentless hate and feud of Montague against Capulet, and Cap ulet against Montague, classic of long ago, is on the screen a strife of today. Much thought and care are ap parent in the production so skill fully has the story been brought to the modern trend. This vital quality of the picture makes It an experi ence of adventure, a atory of thrill and suspense no matter how familiar Assortments! New Designs! Norma Shearer's Juliet Is warmly real and Leslie Howard's Romeo compares favorably with his best previous por trays;. John Barrymore's Mercutio Is one of the outstanding characteri zations, amply confirming all ad vance reports of his excellence. Basil Rathbone's proud, ruthless Tybalt is sound, dramatically powerful. C. Aubrey Smith, Ralph Forbes, Violet Kembie Cooper, Edna May Oliver and Henry Kolker are otheri who distinguish themselves. The meeting of the 111 starred lovers, the famous balcony scene, the marrlsge chamber sequence, Juliet's soliloquy aa she contemplates the death potion, and the memorable tomb sequence are contrasted vividly with the duels, street clashes and personal conflicts.
