She missed George as it some pari of herself was gone. A lack as enormous and unbearable as starva tion, as deprivation of breath and Ught. She laughed aloud, with the In credible delight of It Shi loved George! More than that, the was a part it him, of everything be was and said and did. as he was of her. rhat was why the Kay girl had thought they were married, tn a thousand wayi they were married, as wa uian-ine luj George, as she had so often been oefore. but now more proudly. The Gardlners wanted .u know ii sme of the current group of week end guests could dress in George's huuse instead of coming jnd going in bathing suits as most of them did. Eve was lytng in the sun with George's guests they were hers now, too. much ai they evai could tin. In this summer ihey had ipenl together welded by their pleasures and duties, by their mutual Interest and care tor the child and the old man. they had grown as close as most people do In ove married years And the- would go on all their lives as close as this, wonderfully closer than this; their children, their work and olsv. build' Ing a oneness more and more effort less and complete. She leaned there, dazzled and breathless agauis. the lade:i boughs, understanding. This .vaj why she had so swiftly forgotten Dennyl Why she : d not really loved Denny, she saw now. The hurt of his desertion. wounded pride, had been a great part of her grief. If love was needing a man as you needed sun and air and food and water and sleep, she had never loved Denny: It had been thrill, excitement, kisses and laugh ter. There would be all these with George but how much morel "How much morel" she said aloud, sobered and reverent, pacing down the orchard trail. And then smiled a tittle, planning low she would teU him when he came back. . And what a stupid Idiot she had beenl Why. no wonder he had been angry with herl rie hud jsked her sgaln to marry him In those few hesl.atlng words last night by the hissing fire place. And she must have seemed to Ignore, to evade. . . Well, she'd make ;t up to hunt She had neer once said to him, or to anyone, anything about Denny But she though! they must know Two noi.tlu had gone by now with out her seeing Denny or hearing from him; Uncle henry had a coun tryman's watchfulness about small happenings, and sl.e knew talked most things aver with George They d'scussed her welfare aflectlonstely She knew that from Judge. Besides, with George's mother at a Southamp ton uotal, and Mltzl Powe. In a housa there it wasn't Jkely he dldr't know None of which mattered al all. She planned the words In which she would tell George a down ways, lovers will, as she walked singing down ihe path. With Dreaming Eyes CHS went on with her work blithe ly. She swam and played tennis itb the Gardlners and their friends, iling George's place, as they always Jid. whether he was there or not She walked with ourmng cheeks and dreaming eyes and quick laughter, waiting till George came home She She went over and pulled open a drawer. It was full of shee.s covered with notes n George's small upright hand. She locked down at tt. dream ing. The papers ,ould iventually go Into a tiling cabinet, she knew: out the cablne' would never go to Mrs Cleveland now Some day children would use It again for storehouse and playhouse. Anne Jardlner rapped on a pane, and she ran out to her. Presently she was lying with the group in the laK afternoon sun. Tlicy vers her guests now as .mien as tieorge s. If Peary had found a sign post with thoso words at his dis covery of the North Pole, he couldn't have been much more amazed than were the three expeditions at meet ing high In the Andes mountains In 1633. Tho three expeditions had aa heads Jimenez de Quesacla, Nicholas Peder- mann. and Belnlcaznr. All three had fought their way through thousands of miles of South American wilder ness, never before explored by white man all three had tolled -up the mighty Andes and all three had come out at the same place to meet! Quesada arrived there first. He had set out for purposes of explora tion and conquest In 1636 and ar rived at the present site of Bogota, capltnl of Colombia, two years latrr Here ho decided to stay awhile, sub dued surrounding native villages and started to clear a space for a town. Hardly had he settled down when Into the clearing stumbled the German explorer. Pedermann, and tho surviving members of his worn out band who had etarted into the Jungles of the Amazon from Vene zuela some years before. Pedermann had never heard of Quesada, nor Quesada of Pedermann. Then, to top the whole thing off. Belalcazar ar rived with his expedition from Peru. Sheer coincidence had brought him. He had known of neither of the other two parties and had started out with no specific objective In mind. Yet. of all the millions ot square miles of South America, he had been drawn to the same spot as Queaada and PedermannI Two-Century employees. Manager of tho mortgage loan de partment. Prank H. Oliver Weed, brother of Prank Weed, started with the company in 1888. Today all four men are still with the same concern rep resentative of approximately 2U yeara of sen-Ice.
