BENIN TALKS ON
PACKING OF COURT
AT 20-30 DINNER
Kenneth Denmsn, Medford attor
ney, and member of the Active club,
was guest speaker at the weekly meet
ing of the 20-30 club last night at
Hotel Jackson. His topic was the
much discussed supreme court ques
tion, and in a clear, concise manner,
be enlightened his audience on this
Item of major Interest,
Mr. Denman. a member of the
Oregon Bar association, has been as
signed to make speeches in this re
gard throughout Jackson county, and
his appsarance with the 20-30 club
was In fulfillment of this aaslgnmsnt.
He opened his talk by giving a review
of the workings of the government,
that his listeners would understand
more clsarly the attempt to Increase
the supreme court.
He made this statement in regard
to Increasing the court: "Fifteen
members will undoubtedly find more
difficulty In agreeing than the pres
ent nine." He declared that the
claim that the court has not been
able to keep up with cases brought
before It. Is false, as the clerk has a
record of cases, which shows It to be
up to date.
If the president were given power
to change the supreme court when
ever he chose, Denman stated, "It
would give htm an ax to hold over
their heads." He explained that a
liberal president might work to good
success under an Increase, but that
one not so liberal might wield undue
power. After Mr. Denman's talk,
open discussion was carried on by
members of the club.
The newly constructed buoys, paint
ed in red and white, will be placed
on Emigrant lake sometime this week,
according to Aubrey Sander, general
chairman for the May 2 regatta. Work
Is progressing at a rapid rate and It
was suggested that all members spend
the remaining twelve days In publi
cizing the event.
Last year's attendance, according to
members who participated in the
first annual regatta by the club, was
around 3000. With the outlook for
good weather, a large number of out
bcard racers, and wide publicity, the
club hopes to pass this by a large
mark.
