Rainfall measurementa more de tailed than ever undertaken before are being conducbed in western Oklahoma with the co-operation of the weather bureau. Two hundred farmers on relief In Blaine. Living three mllea Apart, these farmers were supplied with rain gauges and other weather instru ments to be lead almultaneoualy on the hour and every 18 minutes dur ing rains. These measurementa revealed the spottiness of rainfall and the chang ing centers of greatest Intensity dur ing a single atorm. The variation from spot to spot Is considerably greater than had heretofore been known. . 'Thla meana that previous rainfall records baaed on less frequent obser vations of widely spaced gauges. pro Tide an Inaccurate record of the actual amount of water felling on the land," Dr. Thornthwalte explain ed. "It therefore ha been impossible . to gauge possible flood peaks with V"any degree of accuracy." The recordings also have disclosed that wind velocities are extremely variable from place to place within the area atudled, he added. Varia tions take the form of channel of force which parallel the wind direction.
