Nov. 13. (AP) Dr. Francli E. Townaend, co-founder of tho pension pun bearine; ma name, told fioOO excited adherents today that the federal social security act "will, In all probability, be declared unconsti tutional." An explosion of. applause greeted Ibis statement. "I have thai, on th word of aa eminent authority on the constltu tlon," Dr. Townaend said. "I'm not very happy about dhe re sult of the election." Dr. Townaend said with a wry amlle. "I thought It would be closer, "Uut the peopls h'v spoken, na like all good Americans, w abide by the decision. We need not be dis couraged. The need still remains and we have not receded one Inch from our position." Discussing the affairs within the Townaend organization, the slim, elderly physician declared: "We're going to put one, and maybe two men In Washington to check up on the men elected on our program. We're going to keep tab on them to see If they're doing anything." He said, too, that he planned to Introduce a. new bill before the next seselon of congress, to supersede the ones already put up. A new high enrollment was re corded at clemson college this year when 1.5114 students registered open ing day. Holmes who died yesterday morning will be conducted by the Rev. E. 6. Bart I am In the Conger chapel at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon. Interment .will take place In the Jacksonville cemetery where Warren lodge, A P and A. M will conduct graveside rites. William Montgomery Holmes, Jack son county resident for 0.1 years, died At the home of his son. William K. Holmes, on Griffin creek. He waa born November 6, 1890. In Chester, 1111. He studied for the law and ws admitted to the bar In- Illinois In 1878. Mr, Holmes turned to Journalism and edited a newspaper In Illinois before turning westward. When the movement toward the west develop ed, he came to Oregon and was ad mitted to the bar of this state In 1883, though he never practiced law here, Mr, Holmes settled on a homestead In Woodruff Meadows near Union Creek. For a number of years he engaged In the grist mill business with his brother, the late S. B. Holmes. He established a real estate buslnesa In Med ford In 1002 and con tinued in active management of It until his health failed in 1033. Mr. Holmes made numerous friends during his long residence In Jackson county and waa known prominently throughout southern Oregon for his sterling qualities. He was a life mem ber or the Masonic lodge In Jack sonville. In 1880 Mr. Holmes waa married to Emily A. Brown In Jacksonville. He Is survived by his wife and four children: Oeorce B. Holmes of Ragle Point, William E. Holmes of Qrlffln creek, Mary A. Moffat of Medford and Ruth C. Holmes of Carrae), Cal. A eon, Joseph T. Holmes, was killed In the World war. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Jam Holmea nnd Jack and Billy Moffat. E, ASHLAND, NOV. 13. .(Spl.) The house, woodshed and entire posses sions of Mr. and Mrs. Cleo Rose, East Main street road near the Junction of the Pacific highway, were lost Tuesday afternoon when fire of un known origin swept through the building. Mrs. Rose was working In another part of the 10-acre farm when she saw the house In flames. The local fire department was called, but too late to save anything. The Rose family purchased the place last May and moved In early In August, from the Shady Springs camp on the Sisklyous. They had modernized the Interior of the house and many new fixtures and pieces of furniture had been Installed. A grand piano was Included In the loss The family had large food stocks on hand, Including hundreds of jars of rnut and a large quantity of staples, ail of which were destroyed.
