P) LouU Crawford, backwoods WPA worker, stood by his wife today In tha face of her acknowledgement ol the motherhood of "Baby Moses." "I love Effle," Louis Crawford said simply, after bis 24-year-old wife SO years his Juniordeclared false her previous story that she had snatched it from the mouth of a dog that brought It to their doorstop. She told authorities she Invented the first account because she did not want her husband to know she bore the Infant. Hid Baby Two Days. Mrs, Crawford said she slipped from her husband's bed Sunday night and gave birth to the baby In the plney woods outside their one-room cabin. She said she hid It In fright for two days before showing It to Crawford and telling him a big brlndle dog brought It to the house, wrapped In a cloth. Meanwhile, the blue-eyed, six pound boy remained In a New Or leans hospital while District Attorney C. Sidney Frederick sald he would ask the coroner to examine Mrs. Crawford In an effort to determine If she Is the child's mother. F FIRE FIGHTING TO Trees to Be Planted, Camp Grounds Rebuilt, Pine Beetle Battled Many Ac complishments Recorded PORTLAND, Nov. 13. (?) The autumn forest fire menace at an end, 9,000 youths from 58 CCO camps in Oregon and Washington turned to a constructive Improvement program for the winter season. Young trees will be planted In the fire areas, snags will be removed camp grounds will be rebuilt and a campaign undertaken against the western pine beetle. 2500 Hack to Camps. Twenty-five hundred boys, now veteran fire fighters, have returned to their camps from the southwest ern Oregon fire lines. They will be reassigned to regular winter tasks. During the three and one-hnlf year of Its existence in the northwest, ac complishments of the CCC have been numerous and varied. Listed among the Improvements are: Revegetatlon of 755 acres of live stock rauge, construction of 417 mile of range fence, 134 stock bridges, 104 horse bridges, 1344 vehicle bridges, inspection, of 450,000 acres for insect control and 860.000 acres for rodent control. More than 338.000 man days have been spent In flre-flghtlng. Many Improvements. From a recreational standpoint, hn provements have been made In 1800 acres of public campgrounds. Cab- Ins, shelters, campflrcs, stoves, tables and seats havo been erected. The CCC has assisted In the stock ing of nearly a million and a quar-, ter fish. I An extensive program of protecting forests from tire has been worked out. I It Involved establish men t of fire trails, lookouts, telephone lines, road and other facilities.
