Still Mopping Fire Fifty men un der District Ranger Jesse DeWltt were today still mopping up the Buck basin forest fire that spread over 160 acres west of Union Creek. The blaze fas discovered a week ago today. From Agnem Lieut. Maurice Rad cllffe of Camp Agues was a visitor at Medford district CCO headquarters hpre yesterday. Lieut. Radcllffe Is convalescing from a recent appen dectomy. Goes to Umpqua Capt. Claire O. Wallace, former CCO commander of Camp Diamond Lake, has been trans ferred to Camp South Umpqua Falls, relieving Capt. John O. Vines, who la returning to civil life. Teachers Send Money As a con tribution to schools In the fire de vastated Bandon area, teachers In the Ashland public school have raised 50, superintendent George A. Bris coe announced today. The Idea was suggested at a recent conference of school officials In Salem. Closet Fire Fire thla morning did an estimated damage of ai&O to 6200 In & downstairs bedroom clothes clos et at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ar thur E. Lalng, 360 Beatty atreet. Clothes in the closet were deetroyed nd the woodwork scorched. Origin of the blaze was undetermined. The fire was held In check and put out In 30 minutes after a ward alarm had sounded at 8:40. Return from Springs Mr. and Mra. Eric Anderson returned Monday from Clnnlbar springs where they spent the past four weeks. They reported a very enjoyable visit and stated that surroundings are congenial and pleas ant and that the weather could not have been Improved upon. Mrs. An derson was there for her health and stated that she has been greatly bene fited by the stay. Mrs. Kelly Photoed Appearing on the front page of the Oregon Journal this morning was a picture of three prominent figures at the luncheon yesterday arranged In Portland by the Oregon League of Democratic Women for Nan Wood Honeyman, Democratic candidate for congress from the third district. Among the three was Mrs. Edward C. Kelly, the former Mary Orelner of this city, who la president of the league. Hear Candidates Several local Democratic candidates spoke briefly last night at a meeting of the Young Democratic club of Jackson county - In party headquarters at 317 West Mln street. Edwin D. Hicks, pro gram chairman, presided. Nominees at the meeting were District Attorney George A. Codding, Ralph E. Sweeney, candidate for county treasurer, Ralph Jennings, for county commissioner, and Clarence B. Pankey, for county elerk. Ranger Returns fllmerl Jarvl, dis trict ranger of the Rogue river na tional forest In the Butte Falls area, was back at his post today after help ing suppress forest fires in the Co qullle region since September 91. A tnick-traller outfit belonging to the Rogue forest service was brought back last night after being In service In the .coast fire area since September 37. The truck-trailer carries a trac tor and brush plow which foresters said were used very successfully on the coaat. Fast Ticket Sale Reserved seats for the Medford-Klamath Falls high school foot ball game here Saturday were placed on sale at the Jackson County Chamber of commerce at 8:30 this morning and by 8:30 all 40 and BO -yard seats had been sold. Those desiring reserved seata are re quested to call for them at the cham ber, aa no tickets will be held In reserve for future delivery. Pars Checked State police today were tabulating statistics gathered yesterday In a 13-hour check-up of all automobiles and trucks passing the fairgrounds on the Paclflo highway between 6 a. m. and 8 p. m. About 350 trucks were weighed and other wise Inspected and automobiles were checked to see thst all laws were being compiled with. Several arrests were made for non-possession of op erators' or chauffeurs' licenses, police reported. Shopping Here Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Leigh of Reese oreek were among out-of-town shoppers here Monday. Their son Dick, who broke his arm a short time ago, was reported getting along nicely. Call on Friends Mrs. Prank Nell and Miss Nlda Nell were among Med ford residents calling out of town Sunday. They were visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hum phrey at Reese creek. Home from Hospital Mrs. Homer Martin returned to her home In Reese creek Monday after being confined In. ommunlty hospital where she under went a major qperatlon October 14. Mr. Martin and Mr. and Mrs. Merle Jack, also of Reese creek, were here to take Mrs. Martin home. Mrs. Mar tin's condition was reported very sat isfactory, BEN F.TTATT785, CALLED BEYCND Ben P. Piatt, passed away at his home 30 Laurel street this city, Tues day evening at the age of 85. He was born at Columbus, Ohio, Nov. 27 a decendant of the Hugenots. When a small boy, he moved with his parents by covered wagon to a farm In Illi nois. Later, he received his education In Chicago, and In 1870 he was united in marriage at Davenport, Iowa to Miss Martha Qartslde. They resided in the middle west until coming to Medford In 1911. Be sides his wife, he leaves two sons, John B. Piatt of Santa Rosa, Calif.. and Donn V. of Medford. Also four grand children. Helen and Willam Piatt of Oakland, calif., and Carlln and Muriel Piatt of Medford. Funeral services will be held at the Conger chapel at 2:30 Friday with the Rev. Wolford A. Dawes officiat ing. Interment will be In the family plot in the I. O. O. F. cemetery be side bis eldest son who passed away in 1913. E TAKEN BY DEATH Margery Steddom Rogers, 89, passed away at the boma of Mrs. Hoy Ca nine. 533 W. Tenth street Tuesday evening or pneumonia. She had been a resident of Medford for the past nine yean. Mrs. Rogers waa born at Lebanon, Ohio, August 34, 1847. She leaves three grandchildren, Malcolm Gilbert, Portland, Ore.; Mrs T. D. Cutaforth, Los Angeles, Cali fornia, and Mra. Cornellua Bateson. Taooma, Washington, also three gTeat grandchildren. The remains will be forwarded by the Perl Funeral Horn to Salem,' Oregon, this evening where funeral services will be held at the Rlgdon mortuary, Thursday afternoon. In terment In city View cemetery. Reese Creek REESE CREEK, Oct. 38. (Spl.) The Sunday school rally held by the American Union Sunday school at the school house October 35 was well attended. There were seven Sunday schools nd churches represented, most all responding with several numbers on the program, which was certainly enjoyed, as were also the sermons. P.
