By HUGH CLEVELY I t6 SYNOPSIS- Terence Mahony Hat , returned from four years in China to London, and the apartment 01 hit friend Billy Ross He lindt Rote nsrvous, irritable teartul. And then the triendt ttart down to ' Rose father's country place for dinner, and Ross's eat it forced purposely into the ditch and fioee himself it seriously injured. Ross confesses that he knows who tried to murder him and that the man. as well as Rose himself it a crook. He is hurryinn to finish hit story beore losino consciousness. Chapter Two FANCY DRESS '"-pHB man behind the whole thing Is Ambrosa Lawson," he said Id . a strong, clear voice. Ross' grip on Mahony'i sleeve re lazed. He gave a faint sigh and lay still. Far away In the distance a glow In the sky announced the approach of another car. Mahony rose to his feet. His obvious next move was to stop the approaching car. And then what? ... If Ross were not dead already, he would probably die from bis Inju ries. Mahony hoped that he was al ready dead. A man who had been a member of a dope-peddling and kid napping outfit was better dead. He had no doubt whatever about that. r fie 'f Billy Ross was Yes, that was quit olear, as tar as It went. But It did not go far enough. Standing there, waiting, Mahony thought of another Ross, Billy Ross as he bad been tour years ago, rock , less, unstable, but generous and good-natured to a fault The Billy Ross who had saved his life. He knew perfeotly well what he was going to do, Ha wasn't going to the police. If he went to the police with his story about Ross and Law son, they would certainly believe the story about Ross, but It was not so certain that' they would believe the part about Lawson, or, even If they did believe It they might not be able to get proof of Lawson's complicity In the dope trade. Ross had wanted things hushed up for the sake of his parents, and Ma hony proposed to see that his wish waa carried out As for Lawson and bis associates, he would deal wltb them himself. It would give him something to occupy his mind before he went abroad again, Ai the approaching ear came nearer, be stepped out Into the road way and held up his hand. At the scene of the crash the car stopped; a couple of men sprang out and came running forward. "What's happenedt" aaked one of thorn excitedly. "Good heavens, what a frightful crash! Is anyone hurt!" "Yes, 1 think my friend haa been killed," answered Mahony quietly. "We burst a back tire and the car overturned." He paused. "There was anothor car Just be hind us. but It didn't even stop," he added. The three of them got busy. Ross , was lifted Into the newcomers' car and taken to a hospital. Mahony telo phoned to Captain Ross, telling him of his son's accldont, and had a long Interview wltb the police. The story that he told them was simply that a back tire burst at speed and the car overturned. After that lu returned to the hospital to await Captain Itoas. At a late hour that night, Hilly Ross, waa unconscious but still alive. There was, the doctors said, a faint chance that be might survive. But Ihey held out no hopes whatever T August was the busiest month In thfl 10-ymr history of the Pacific cot airway between Brattle, Mod ford and Han DIcro. iih a total of 10,268 revenue pftwenitpr, 94,731 pounds of air mail and 88,408 pound of air exprcM having bn flown ovei the route. Whatever happened Billy Rosa would be a helpless cripple tor the rest of his life. TERENCE MAHONY was not a man who would strike the casual observer as being remarkable to look at His age was twenty-six, He was of tough, stringy build, stood about five feet ten In holght, weighed about 175 pounds, and was inclined to be careless what clotbeB be wore. He carried himself wltb a slight slouch that made blm look shorter than be really was. His eyes were grey, and very calm and unworrled; his smile, though Infrequent, was goodnatured: bis cbln was obsti nate; bis hair was a reddish brown color and Inclined to wave. His manners were quiet and self contained; when be was bored be was apt to show It by inattention. There were certain contradictions about him which puzzled, and some times annoyed, people wltb whom he came Into contact He was an excel lent natural athlete, and had repre sented his school at football and box ing, and his county at lawn tennis, but be was Incapable of taking any game really seriously. From his father, an Irishman who had been Professor of English liter ature at a minor English university, still unconscious. he had Inherited a love of reading. Sometimes, tor long periods, he re mained silent; at other times, wltb tbe most serious air, he talked the most fantaatio nonsense. If he made up his mind to do any thing, he did not waste time talking about it; he simply sot about doing it He liked to make his own plans and act on them, and the opinions of other people did not worry blm. THE day after the smash he re turned to London, took a couple of furnished rooms tor himself, and removed all his things from Ross's flat He also took the opportunity of going thoroughly through Ross's possessions In the hope of finding something whlcb might abed light on his criminal activities. But be found nothing. One possession only of Ross's, howovor, he took away with him a fancy costume which Ross had Intended to wear at the Cinema Ball. That costume bad arrived the pre vlous morning, and Mahony had ex amlned it with sonte curiosity. It waa a long, brightly colored gar ment with a colored head-dress, and was obviously meant to disguise It; wearer aa an Arab sheik. But Mn hony noticed, both robe and head dross were lined with black and were made roveralble, so that the could be worn equally well tnsldr out Worn thus, with a slightly differ , ent arrangement of the head-dress the costume transformed Its wearer Into a black.garbcd, cowled monk. He had asked Ross whore, and foi what reason, he had obtained such a curiously mado costume, and Host had become fidgety and Irritable and had replied crossly that b didn't see anything curious about i and he neltbor knew nor cared where It had originally come from: he was wearing It because It hat) been sent along to him by a friend. Recalling that Ela Little was to havo been kidnapped at tbe Cinema Hall, Mahony connected the costume with the deed. He derided to attend the ball and to wonr Ross' costume. (Copyright, true.
