Landon In the presidential Ijampalgn, going all the way In bis opposition to the re-election of his one-time friend and political associ ate, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Taking "a walk." as he prophesied he would do In his address before the American Liberty league last January the former governor and 1028 Demo cratic presidential candidate declared last night at a carnegla ball rally: "I firmly believe that the remedy . for all the Ills that we are suffering from today Is the election of Alf M Landon." In completing his break with the president. Smith said: "I have no grudge against the na tional administration or against any body connected with it. My fault with them la that they have betrayed the party. Claim Communist welcome. After declaring that the Roosevelt administration gave the "strength and the power of the so-called Demo cratic administration" to candidates of other parties so long as they sup ported the New Deal, Smith declared: "Why. even a communist with wire whiskers and a torch In his hands is welcome so long as he signs on the dotted Una." Smith's declaration of support for the Kansas governor came at the end of his half -hour speech. He said: "I am an American before I am a Democrat, before I am a Republican or before I am anything. "I have never In my long public career, ducked, dodged or pussyfoot. ed. I have never found fault with anything unless 1 was prepsred to suggest a remedy; and while I may differ on matter of traditional party policy, I regard these , things In the crisis of today as merely my own. "I am satisfied as to the baslo and fundamental needs of this country, sound and trustworthy, snd I can oe relied upon to cherish and preser the great principles upon which the country was founded and without which. In my belief. It cannot endure I firmly believe that the remedy for all the lUa that we are suftertnj from today Is tne election of Alf M. Landon." Smith's sallies at the New Deal brought frequent rounds ot laughter from the audience, which tilled the J.0O0 seats In Carnegie hall. Hecklers Interrupt. Thrice, hecklers Interrupted the address. "Won't you explain -why you did not agree with the people that turn ed against Rosevelt?" shouted a man In the second row, when Smith pic tured himself as having defended Roosevelt when "almost every other leader In the state waa against him." Some shouted threats to throw the heckler out bodily: but Smith replied: "That la a rather complicated ques tion. You had better put it In better English. I don't get It. One minute Ihave the platform. After 1 get fin ished you can get up here and havo as much as you want to any." Just as Smith's declaration tot Gov. Landon was being applauded, a heavy-set man In the left center of the orchestra shouted that tormer Mayor James J. Walker bad shown he could "take It" with more grace than the once "Hoppy Warrior' Smith's radio time wss ended, and be made no reply: but the shouting crowd headed for the heckler.
