Don't like homer Itchy feet that want to roamf These were once my symptoms, too I've returned from trav'llng through sixteen thousand miles or more Olaclar land to troplo ahnre Desert sand and blistering sun, Where snakes and glla monsters run; Tropic palm and dripping heat. Where hot Atlantic breakers beat; Cltlea towering black and foggy; Dank awamps, musty and boggy; Skeetera, 'gators, poison lizards, Hurricanes and blinding bllraarda: Mt. McKlnley towering high. Etcned against an Icy sky; Olaclers, Icebergs, frozen sea (Thanks, no frosted nose for me). Ah, there's no romance now you know In nvukluk, malemute and anow (I'll admit thla may be so When It's not sixty-two below). Romance In the tropics, too, White baked sand, sktoa so blue, palms against a moonlit sky, Sluggish streama where 'gators Ho lt all sounds pretty hard to beat (When you're not sweltering In the heat). Too hot, too cold, too high, too low Something wrong where'er you go. And water? Say, such awful stuff Alkali, hot, nasty, rough. And smells? All you couldn't wish: New Orleans' market to Alaska'a fish Let poots sing of distant clime Olve me Medlord every time. Here the water'a sparkling pure, Not one hardship to endure. Here you find the ideal spot Not too cold and not too hot. Dashing streama snd leaping trout Paradise beyond all doubt. Now. when I feel that yen to roam, I'll read a book and stay at home. V. W. When Wedding Hells Are Mlcnt (To the Newly-wed) Just accept this as a token Of a friendship that's unbroken: For it's written by the man who really knows What It means to take a wife. And be henpecked all your life: And enoh week will find you broke from buyln' clothes. When you're through with all that spoon In', And you're over honey-moonln': And the weddln bells have lost their golden charm When ynu'ro almost driven frantic With s set of howlin' twins upon your arm. Oh, the goln' now. Is easy, And the path la cool and breesy; And tt looks like perfect bliss for evermore v But you mustn't be forgettln.' When those babies start to fretthY You must leave your cosy bed to walk , the floor. Now, It seems like milk and honey, Bins, It isn't quite so funny When you find that two oan't live as ehesp as one. Yes, they call It matrimony, When the thing Is all bologna; But Just go ahesd don't let mo spoil your fun. Elroy W. Anderson, 433 Benson Street, Medford, Ore. Los Angeles MEDFORD - New York Omaha . Phoenix Portland Reno Rosehurg Lalt Lake City San Francisco Seattle Bpokane Walla Walla Washington, D.C. LITERARY DIGEST POLL MISLEADING Most Voters in Mail Poll Are Prosperous Few of Poor Heard From 'Outs' Also First to Send in Ballots Early returaa from th r Digest presidential noli am and can aerloualy mlsleid both Re publican and Democratic manage ment, Elmo B. Roper, Jr., New York market analyst, declares In an article "Forecasting Election Returns," pub lished today In the Review of Ha vlewa. A discussion of "straw vote' methods, the article concludes that the result, obtained by the Ameri can Institute of Publlo Opinion, cur rently ravonng President Roosevelt, are more dependable at the preeent time. Doubts regarding the represents, ttve character of early returns from the Digest poll arise from the fol lowing facts, the author says: 1. The poll la conducted entirely by mall. The largest number of re turaa from a mall poll wually comes from prosperous people; 47 percent of well-to-do people, accustomed to receiving and replying to mall, have been known to answer mall polls when only three percent of the def initely poor families have expressed an opinion. To offset thla weakness personal calls on people In lower eco nomical levels must be made, a. First returns from mall polls on political queatlona come from peo ple with violent foellugs, The "throw the rascal out" bloo are the moat prompt. The "outs" are always the moat vocal, Thus It la normal ei pectancy In the present poll that the Republicans would be more prompt In returning ballots. Mr. Roper points out that "say msil survey which does not consider the economlo levols of Its respond ents Is spt to be unreliable because It reflects an undue percentage of the opinions of the prosperous. IB addition, accuracy requires a close atatlstlcal balance between all other pertinent factors such as the propor tions living In large cities, small cities, small towns, and on (arms; the proportlona of men and women; the relative members In various age groupa; and factors varying by geo graphic areas." According to Mr. Roper, the Amer ican Institute of Publlo Opinion poll Is apparently making an earnest ef fort to get returns from a cross see- . tlon of the varying eoonomlo levels, and from the young and old alike. This poll, he says, "relies on mailed ballots to get returns from people In upper Income tnd age brackets, but has found It necessary, In order to preserve the balance, to get re turns from people In the lower In come brackets and from young peo ple by means of personal Interviews. "It Is Interesting to note," ood tlnues Mr. Roper, "that the mall bal lots coming from upper Income level, and older people show a preference for Landon, but the majority far ' Roosevelt among the poorer people) and the young people Is so strong thst the results of the poll as a whole ahow Roosevelt well In front. This conflicts sharply with early Literary Digest returns." Because of scientific sampling methods, Mr. Roper believes that the aurvey being made by Fortune Maga zine la apt to be acourate in fore- -casting popular vote. Since not all statea are covered, however, he does not believe that it will necessarily be reliable In forecasting the elec toral vote.
