MEDFOKD WAIL TRIBUTE, MEDFORD. OREGON. FRIDAY. SEPTEirBER 2S. 1936. PARE NINE STUDY TO SETTLE OF CRATER LAKE CRATER LAKE. (Spl.) Dr. E. Howell Williams, eminent geologist of the University of California, left last week after completing a prelimi nary study of Crater lake as a part of complete research Into the geo logic past of the area. Dr. Williams animates that four years will be necessary for the research. His work Is sponsored by the Car negie Institution of Washington, D. C. and will be the most complete geologic study, the park has ever re ceived. Joseph Dlller, fsmous government geologist. In 1802 was the first scien tist to make a geologic survey of Cra ter lake.. At that time roads In the park were rare, making It Impossible to reach all sections of the area In making his study In the limited time he had available. He arrived at the conclusion, however, thst the snces tral mountain u: Crater lake, Mi. Mazama. was a gigantic volcano which collapsed within Itself. This theory was generally accepted but In the meantime new thought came Into being tuat perhaps the TOOO-foot summit wss destroyed as a result of explosion. Evidence was effered to support the theory. ; With these different theories,, the mystery of old Mazama and the origin of Crater lake deepened. The research of Dr. Williams is ex pected to revenl evidence directly pointing the wsy to the solution of the mystery. During the past fort sight he studied a number pt the canyons of the park. This month he leaves for Java and Japan to spend the winter studying volcsnoes there to gain material which he expects will be 'of aid to him when h returns to Crater lake next July to spend the entire summer carrying on the research. dark that the atara and. the outline of the tree-tops against the sky were the only objects which could be seen.
