He is editor of the Baltimore Sun, and one of the original anti-Roosevelt Democrats. He started to lambast the president in his paper, before the New Deal got fairly under way, and has been at it ever such nation-wide attention, he syndicated, and they are now practically nil the larger Republican newspapers. The present writer has read Frank Kent's column, pretty regularly for over a year, and while we seldom agree with him, we hnve come to have a high respect for him. He is extremely partisan, often bitter, and to our never been cheap, he hns never to our knowledge hit below the belt. We wish as much might be said of some other anti-Roose velt columnists, newspapers, and bush league G. 0. P. campaigners. WHEN there was an attempt to make it appear Big Business, Wall Street, and organized business as a whole, waB not practically a unit against Roosevelt, that" Landon not Roose velt was fighting the battle of fused to lend his column to such palpable nonsense. Ho frankly stated such a political cleavage did not exist, and not only admitted organized business in this country, as a whole, was fighting Roosevelt, but gave it as one of .his chief reasons for believing Landon would win, because he main tained, no presidential candidate in the history of American politics, opposed by American business as a whole, had ever reached the White House. JE has taken the same realistic and self respecting attitude toward the shameful campaign, of fear which the Republi can board of strategy launched sometime ago, with its vice presidential candidate, Colonel Knox, as its oratorical spear head. 1 Fear is a time honored weapon of the second rate, table thumping politician and if it can be put over on the electorate a vory effective one, but Frank Kent would have none of it. Among his other activities Kent writes the editorials for "Life". In the last issuo of this magazine, the Baltimore editor continues his attacks on the president, but ho has this to say, about those opposing Roosevelt, who are trying to scare the people into believing that if he is re-elected, uncontrolled cur rency inflation and national bankruptcy are inevitable. We quoto: there are plenty who are convinced that with a re-elected Roosevelt, currency Inflation or the cruder sort will at once follow and thua national bankruptcy and financial chaoe be come Inevitable. Acute guttering would be our lot while being transformed Into a Fascist state or while the dictatorship of the proletariat waa establishing Itself. NONE OP THESE TH1NOS IS OOINO TO HAPPEN. WHETHER MR. LANDON OR MR. ROOSEVELT WINS, THE COUNTRY WILL SURVIVE and the system remain unchanged at least for some years to come. Nor do really sensible people think otherwise. In brief, the nation Is sobering up very fast. We have one whole of a bill to psy for the broken crockery of the four-year spree. We are bound to bleed and aweat and awear and suffer about paying It. BUT, CITIZENS, THE COUNTRY IB NOT OOINO TO POT, AND OHAOS IS NOT JUST AROUND THE CORNER. So bo cslm. Your money Is still safer here than anywhere else In the world. Now we maintain that is a fine oxnmple of what might be called, for want of a bettor term true journalistic statesman ship, a placing of principle above partisanship, a devotion to truth above nil cheap appeals to passion and prejudice, nnd without any deviation from opposition to Roosevelt, which with Kont is whole souled and 100. KJOR have we any particular quarrel with that broken crock- ' cry metaphor, although we absolutely disagree with the Bnllimoro scribe, as to tho cause of it. This country, tho past five or six years, has been through a war, n social and eoonomic war, and inevitably . there has boon confusion and destruction. The bill for that will havo to be pnid, and whether Landon or Roosevelt is elected, it WILL be paid. Thero will in either enso be no national bankruptcy, there will be no uncontrolled inflation. However the election goos, our money your money will bo safer hero than any whero else in the world. Tfiat's true, Unit's common sense, nnd it represents a sound patriotic faith in tho esscntinl soundness of this country, which should bo held and expressed party, whether they write, talk, presidential campaign. . "TPIIE siimo high minded attitude and refreshing sanity were shown by tho Baltimore editor when certain Republican speakers and editors made the is in reality a communist, and catering to the communists. This, snid Kent, is absurd, President Roosevelt isn't a communist, never has been, never will be. Ho ngreed with nn Oregon paper, the Salem Statesman, also opposed to Roosevelt, when it cnlled tho Chicago Tribuuo for making such a chargo in its editorial columns: This piper has no sympothy with the Tribune attempt: and in general has entertained high contempt for Colonel McCor mlek and Ills newspaper. The president la no communist; to imply that he la Is untrue. To do so with knowledge ol falsity of the accusation la despicable. CO much for the G, 0. P. campaign of fear, supported by cheap innuendo and outright misrepresentation. The same goes for the Democrats if any. Mr. Kent main tains many people believe if Roosevelt is defeated, there will be a rod revolution nnd neither life nor property will he safe in this country. If this sort of scare propaganda has been used by any Demo cratic lender or newspaper, we have failed to sec it. Put if it bus been or if it should be, then it should meet with tho same scorn nnd condemnation, on the port of Roosevelt supporters, and' nil right thinking people, as tho contemptible campaign of four and hate, indulged in by such papers as the Chicago Tri bune, nnd those of the unsavory William Randolph Henrst. 'T'lllS is going to be nn intense campaign, nnd no doubt an extremely close one, but there is no reason why on both sides it can't be fought out on as high and self-respecting a plane, n that established by the hard-hitting but strnight-shoot-ing Frank II.
