M. Weatherford, pastor -evangelist,
said In part as follows:
"The history of the life of Balaam
Is brief, as recorded in the 33nd to
the 25th chapters. Inclusive, of the
Book of Numbers.
"This portrayal depicts a man who
made a vain attempt to throttle and
alter God's edict. He tried to make
of himself a hall fellow well met and
vsold his standing for worldly gtn at
w-the sacrifice of his favor with God.
1 'Balak sought him. as a prophet of
God, to curse the Invasion of the
Israelites. In communication with
the Lord. Bp-Is am received definite
Instruction to aay 'No to Balak'a
embassy, who had been dispatched to
confer with him. Accordingly, hi
reply to them was negative. On
learning this Balak sent a more
honorable and princely delegation to
Balaam in an effor to gain his con
sent. Balaam said 'No," to them
again but he weakened In his reply
by saying If you will stay over
night, I will consult the Lord further
about the matter.'
"A further consultation, on his
part would be presumptuous. He
had received definite Instruction to
not go. It is the height of folly to
. ask the Lord If you may do some
thing which involves wrong. Yet, to
suit one's own notion, many have
erroneously declared that they preyed
through on a proposition which the
word of God would forbid. It la fu
tile to bolster up a defense for one's
, actions that are Incompatible with
the word of pod.
"Balaam finally yielded to the
temptation for a mint of gold, but
the dumb ass on which he traveled
was quicker to sense the hand of
divine intervention than himself.
When one side-steps the will of God.
he becomes both spiritually blind
and deaf. The dumb ass could see
the angel, sent to hedge up the way,
but not until God used the ase to
peak his Message did Balaam real
ise the message and messenger of
God.
"Balaam waa attempting to blame
the ass as the cause of his trouble,
whereas the true picture revest the
fact that he had made an ass of
himself.
'To some, there Is a difficulty
about the dumb ass rebuking the
perverse prophet, but a more mys
terious thing, to me, than that an
as should speak, l that a man
should forget God. That a man
should be so stupid, neglectful and
willfully disobedient to the claims of
Christ In the interest of his eternal
welfare Is more shockingly myste
rious and unbelievable than though
x all the beasts of the field open their
U mouths to talk. That a man should
Insult the law of God by doing un
' righteously Is the sum total of all
dumbness."

Palie" seems to be the main word
in French these daysl
The French II classes, under the
Instruction of WUna Klncald, have
taken up the task of translating the
various pear wrappers and preparing
posters on the Medford pear Industry.
It Is Interesting to note that prac
tically all of the pear wrappers from
this section of the country have
some French word on them.
The fact that originally all of the
pear stock and many of the names of
the different types of pear came
from France, and that we export so
many boxes to France makes this
study very Interesting. The various
local packing houses have contrib
uted booklet and wrappers on this
subject for French students, The
poster, arranged by Helen Chlrgwln
and Caroline Cooke, and translations
are on display In the French rooms.
Wells Refuses To
Divulge Birth Date
j LONDON, Sept. 32. (AP) H. G.
Wells, known as the youngest of the
"big three' of modern English litera
ture, celebrated hla birthday today
but refused to divulge how old he Is.
, The record book showed him to be
70, but the British author denied
this.
George Bernard Shaw was 80 last
July 26. The third member of the
literary triumvirate was Rudyard Kip
ling, who died last January at the age
of 70.
"It Is now a race between Shaw
and myself," Wells chuckled.

rman companion went on duty today

the lettuce workers' strike.
The woman picket wore a sign

The agricultural department e&ld to
day receipts from the sale of prin
cipal farm products In Oregon during
the first seven month of 1936
amounted to $38,080,000, compared
with $32,400,000 for the correspond
ing period last year.
July, 1936, receipts totaled i 10,059.
000. compared with (6,661.000 for
July, 1935. the department said.
Receipt for the first seven month
of 1933 amounted to $23,296,000 and
for the corresponding period of 1934
they totaled $27,438,000. In July.
1934, receipts totaled $6,722,000 In
July. 1933, $6,212,000.
Of the total for the first seren
months of this year. $27,190,000 came
from sales of livestock and livestock
products, compared with $24,360,000
for the corresponding period of 1935.
the department said. Sale of crops
brought In rflO.egc.OOO during the
1936 period, and $8,040,000 during
the 1933 period.
July, 1936, receipts from sale of
livestock and livestock product
amounted to $5,605,000. compared
with $4,622,000 a year ago. Crop
receipt amounted to $4,464,000 for
July of this year, $2,029,00 for July,
1935.

Pasqualle spent hi wedding night In
Jail. He was charged by the Humane
society with cruelty to children after
indignant parents displayed the blis
tered fingers of seven children. When
the youngster Joyfully gave the
newly weds a "shivaree", the Humane
society said, Pasqualle heated $2
worth of nickels in a skillet and
tossed them to the serenaders.
Battleship, Tanker lilt.
SAN PEDRO, Cal., Sept. 22. (AP)
The battleship Texas and a British
tanker, Scalaria, collided today In
the fog, the marine exchange re
ported. The damage to the Texas ap
parently consisted In a large Indenta
tion in the stern, the exchange said.
Both the battleship and the tanker
proceeded to Anchorage.

AGED PORTLANDER DIES
FROM BEATUP IN HOME
PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 22. (AP
Death of Simon Bayer. 72, sent police
on a search for a slaying motive to
day. Bayer was found naked, un
conscious and badly bruised at his
home Saturday. He died yesterday
without regaining consciousness.
Deputy Coroner Roy Crabtree said he
apparently had been attacked Thurs
day and that direct cause of death
probably was pneumonia, resulting
from exposure.
