York. The "inaide atory" of engineering problems solved In Introducing pet roleum natural gas In southern Ore gon was revealed by D. E. ("Don") York, vice-president and general man ager of the gas company, in a recent address before the Canadian Gas As sociation, meeting Jointly with the northwest conference of the Pacific Coast Gas Association at Vancouver. B.C. , That the local; gas company was Indeed "pioneering" was disclosed by York's technical exposition of the change-over, which has attracted na tional attention In the Industry and has blazed trails which many other communities, using Medford, Ash . land, Grants Pass and Roseburg as examples, are expected to follow. ' "The construction period prior to ' the changeover required nine months," York said in addressing his Jellow-englneers and utility officials. "One construction crew was used for Installation of tanks, generating equipment and underground copper 1 tube lines, used in place of the cus ' tomary iron pipe. This work was followed by a service crew, caring for the adjustment of customers' equip ment when the .new gas was turned Into the system, replacing the former manufactured gas." Among the complicated problems described by Mr. York was tne iact that In Medford and Ashland, the ' former plant supplied both towns through a transmission main approx imately 13 miles In length at a pres sure of 100 pounds, this pressure be ing reduced at the city limits by means of a series of reducing valves, but still operating at many times the pressure required for the new gas. Because of the low pressure requlre- Congratulations Mr. D. E. York on the opening of the new home of the Southern Oregon Gas Corporation MEDFORD ELECTRIC INC. It would have been necessay to increase the size of the mains, had not a plan been successfully developed to dis tribute the gas as a liquid through copper tubing, to small distributor stations (five in Medford and three in Ashland). These distributors arc equipped with automatic pressure controls, converting the gas from liquid to vapor by an ingenious air mixer that might be compared to the carburetor on a gasoline engine, and releasing it at the proper pressure of one and one-half pounds. One of the most Important changes, from the viewpoint of the gas cus tomer, was the Increase in BTU (heat) content from fi50 for the old gas to 880 for petroleum natural gas. This required considerable adjust ment of appliances, especially older types. "Through economies effected .by this revolutionary method of dis tribution," York points out, "it has been possible to distribute the new, hotter, cleaner gas at reduced rates. It la our policy to give the public, through rate reductions and better service," the benefit of any savings we can make by more efficient methods. "Only those of ua who went through the actual experience of converting, this system have any idea of the 'midnight oil' that was burned in working over plans and specifica tions, the months of hard work and frequent discouragements, the costly experiments, and the satisfaction we all derived from the successful solu tion of our problems, if we have ac complished anything unusual, and the gas industry seems to feel that we have, It Is because of the leader ship and engineering genius of our president, Mr. J. A. Ward, for whom the word failure does not exist and to whom every technical problem is Just another- challenge to be answer ed only by its solution." The promoters are optimistic about the prospects for an Indian market. There is only one car for every 1.426 persons in the country. At present, freight, packing, insurance, Import duty and incidentals raise the price of an imported car by about 600, to It is felt that production can compete with foreign manufacturers.
