LAKES OF CASCADE AREA ARE STOCKED Nations Desert Spain In Dire Hour of Need Says Socialist Leader NEW BUILDINGS READY SOON ON U. OF 0. CAMPUS! The Rogue river mtlonal forest la cooperation with the stats game com mission toot; had completed plant ing 778,000 flsh In the lakes of the Cascade divide In Jackson and Kieoi. ftth counties. Except for a few of the larger lakes which are accessible by road, the flah were packed in By use of horses and mules. The dletrlbutlon and species of the fish as planted were as follows: Lake Harrietts. 14,000 eastern brook. Clover Lake, 0,000 eastern brook. Dee Lake, 8,000 eastern brook.' Bert Lake, 4,000 eastern brook. Beals (Lone) Lake, 10,000 eastern brook. Lake Cary, 10,000 eastern brook. Blue Rock oroup So., 4,000 eastern brook. Blue Rock Oroup No., 6,000 eastern brook. Pear Lake, 30,000 eastern brook. Heavenly Twins, 30,000 rainbow, Isherwood Lakes, 10,000 rainbow. Puck Lakea, 10,000 eastern brook. Margurette Lake, 7,000 eastern brook. Donna Lake, 3,000 eastern brook. Horseshoe (8ky Lake), 10,000 east ern brook. Island Lake, 30,000 rainbow. Pour Mile Lake, 100,000 (18,000 E. brook, 85,000 rainbow.) pish Lake, 635,000 eastern brook. A forest service bulletin describes the work as follows: "ERA crews were used to assist In this planting project and all 17 lakes long the Sky Lakeg area and In the Mountain lakes primitive area were stocked. As many of these lakes were accessible only by trail, pack strings of horses and mules were used In transporting the fish from the end of the road to the lakes. The weal nuie sge involved on theae pack trips was approximately 300 miles. The largest Ingle pack was to Clover laae in ine primitive are, which was an 18 mile round trip. "The flngerllngs were shipped from the state hstchery at Crooked Creek to the Cold Springs packers camp on the Pelican Butte road In large cans containing approximately looo rain bow trout or 600 eastern brook trout, the fish averaging in sin from 1V4 to t Inches in length, the eastern brook being the larger. At the end of the roads the cans were loaded on the pack animals. "The water temperature In the cans at the beginning of the trip was ap proximately 88 degrees. As the water warmedeconsldersbly during the pack trip, and sudden changes of tempera ture result In high mortality of the flngerllngs, and since most of the Jskes planted have an average temper ature of 88 to 70 degrees, it was nec essary to submerge the oloeed cans in the lake water for about five minutes to allow gradual equalization of the temperature. Very few flah were lost. Two hundred out of 10,000 packed Into Harriett lake on the first trip to the Mountain lakes primitive area were loat but In later tripe only about 88 out of 0,000 which were packed Into Clover lake, failed to survive. "Four Mile, Blue Rock, and Clover lake were planted with fresh water shrimp for flah food. An Investigation of the tub which were planted last season was made at the same time the planting was carried on this year. It was found that the rainbow trout which were stocked last season aver aged about SVs Inches and eastern brook about 8 Vi Inches in length. In different Iskes, however, the slues of the flah vary. It Is apparent that the temperature of the water Is reflected In the rata of growth of planted flngerllngs. In the colder lakes they are smaller In sire by approximately an Inch during the flrat year than they an in the wanner lakes. "Considerable game was seen dur ing the transporting of the fish. These consisted mainly of bear and deer. Yellow Jackete encountered by the pack strings provided the most trou ble and in several Instances almoat resulted In loss of the fish. "The origin of the names of some of the lakea la rather Interesting, among them being Dee lake which was named after Dee Wright, deceased northweet packer and woodsman: Bert lake, named after Bert Wlthrow, deceased, an old pioneer In Klamath county who hunted In the territory of this lake: Beals lake, named after Bill Beals, pioneer of Klamath ' and Jackson oountlea, who trapped In the Beal lake territory as early aa 1874 Carv lake waa named after Cary Ramaby, deceased Klamath county pioneer, pear lake was named because of the shape of the lake resembling that of a pear. Island lake derivea its name from the fact that It contains severs! Islanda. "The origin of the name Heavenly Twins tor those two lakes is not known but the sppesrancs of the lakes certainly Justify this term. Ish erwood lakea, first planted In 1855. were named after p. w. Isherwood one of J. B- Waldo'a party which In cluded Mr. Mlnto, William Taylor, I. J. Hiunanson, who In 1888 made the trip down the skyline trail from Mt. Hood to Mt. Shasta. Initials of this party were carved on a tree at the southeast end of the lake with the date September 18, 1888." The foreat servtoe also assisted the United states bureau of fisheries at Butte Palls In planting 78.000 steel head In the upper Rogue river and Its tributaries. "Ten days before the Ksmerun In cident (the search of a German mer chantman by a Spanish war vessel August 10) a German vessel landed Its cargo of airplane and tank parts at Cadiz. "I also know the rebels received much more war material from Ger many than they were able to pay for in caeh down. "The Inference Is clear Franco has sold his soul to the Germans, who one day will present the bill." Prleto waa asked why the Spanish government had not referred Its pro tests to the League of Nations. He replied quietly: "Ethiopia presented her case to the league. You know what happened.
