Queen Hortenae of Holland, came to Normandy for her health. In August, 1834, the Duchess du Berry spent two weeks at Dieppe and made this beach popular. For everal years In auccesslon this royal bather was faithful to the Norman beach, where people waited Impatiently for her to open the season. Her first bath each season was a real event. The Duchess du Barry, at tired In long black satin trousers over which the wore an ankle-length tunic completed by a bathing bonnet of wax cloth was accompanied by the mayor of Dieppe. For this occasion, the mayor wore evening clothes, varn ished slippers, and carried a tall silk hat In one hand. With the other hand he escorted the Duchess du Barry Into the water until he stood knee-deep in the sea. Alexandre Dumas discovered the beach of Trouvllle In 1834. The au thor of "The Three Muaketeere' re turned to Paris so enthusiastic about his vacation on the Norman coaat that other fashionable people adopted Trouvllle as a summer resort. Within 10 yeara Trouvllle grew like a mush, room town of hotels end vlllaa, sec in I860 the famous Saturday train was organized from Paris. The beach at Deauvllle became pop ular at this time, and In 1898 the Duke de Morny perauaded the whole Imperial court to accompany mm to Deauvllle. The entire Norman coaat became lined with beach reaqfta be tween 1830 and 1870 until Empress Eugenie set a new fashion of going to the silver Coast and Biarritz, which, In the middle of the 19th cen tury, had only been a poor fishing village. - iru. vnur vacation, freshen your akin with Belcano Cosmetics.
