Candidates have been chosen In 91 states, in some others, such aa New York, where renomlnatlon of Gover nor Herbert H. Lehman by the Demo crats late next month Is taken for granted, the actual selections will be but s formality. Reports from across the country tell an almost uniform story of at tempts by the major parties to Inter lock their state campaigns with that for the presidency. Here and there questions like the Townsend old age pension plan are getting attention comparable to that given the records of the new deal and of the outgoing state administrations, but without hard and fast party lines being drawn. War Cheit Provided With Democratic and Republican national finances being built up for the September-October drive, a sub stantial share of the cash Is expected to be allotted to the larger states outside of the south vjhlch elect gov ernors and have 149 of the 81 votes the electoral college. These are New York, with 47 electors; Illinois, 20; Ohio, 26; Michigan, 10; Massa chusetts, 17 end Iowa, 11, Twenty-six of the state where gu bernatorial term expire now have Democratic administrations. Six are Hepublloan, Minnesota Is farmer-labor and Wisconsin Is under the Pro gressives. However the parties fare election day, a heavy turnover In the personnel of the executives already la certain. Twenty Incumbents are not seeking r lection , because the tt ate constitution limits the time one man may serve, or the governor as pires to the senate, or or other icasons. Discord Threatened To date, none of the 14 seeking another term has been denied renom lnatlon. A few had or have contests their hands, threatening party discord In the campaign Itself. Both Dakotas are In this category. Beginning with the selection of the Republican candidate In Utah this Saturday, primaries or state conven tions will continue until Rhode Is land has completed the list, prob ably In October. P Mem bers of the state liquor control com mission displayed little enthusiasm today when asked at their meeting what action, If 'any, is to be taken on the proposal of Austin Flegel jr., commission attorney, to prohibit wo men from standing at bars while drinking beer. Chairman a, K- McMahon said the legulatlon had been prepared by Plegel but ho did not know when It would be taken up for consideration by ' the commission. SL OT The reception of hl new play, Moroni," spurred Edgar Lee Master, to work today on a new book, which he said would be "of biographical nature." Master,, former Chicago lawyer turned poet and dramatist, was pres ent last night at the world premiere of "Moroni," an epic drama based on the recorded life of Joseph Smith. founder 6f the Mormon faith. The play follows the career of Smith, Vermont farm boy who sopn after migrating to western New York a century ago, proclaimed a new faith. A moving story told with under standing, humor and occasional flashes of almost contemporary satire, ' Moroni" relates Smith's career from his translation of the golden 'plates, through the persecution that drove him and his followers to Ohio and Illinois.
