(AP) More than a thousand government militiamen. Including a hundred wo men, died In a mass execution by rebel forces at Almendralejo, a cor respondent ol the newspaper Dlario Notlclas reported today. Lisbon heard the city of Badajoz, was In flames. The town of Almendralejo Is In Badajoz province, which Is largely In control of the rebels. The capital city of Badajoz lUelf, is held by govern ment troops. Bombs Fire Badajoz Badajoz was fired, said reports reaching Lisbon, by a rebel airplane attack in which 19 Incendiary bombs were dropped on the city. Thayer, wanted In this city on a fictitious check charge, has been arrested in Ventura, CaU state police were advised today. A felony warrant had been Issued In Moilford Justice court charging the man with utterance of several bogus checks In Medford in the fall af 1934. (AP) All rail roads operating In the state have agreed to extend reduced hay freight rates from Oregon points to the drought region, subject to Approval by the Interstate commerce commiS' Bion, the executive office announced today. The emergency order to aid the drought region had previously ex cluded Oregon points, state officials pointed, out. A campaign was started by the governor, Congressman James W. Mott, the state department of ag riculture and varlo - farm organiza tions to have the hay sections in the state included In the reduced freight rates. (AP) Detec tive Charles Westcott said today that a further investigation will be made into the shooting of a 17-year old boy by a woman who said she had been bothered by prowlers. The boy, shot In the left arm, was Identified as Winifred A. Wlttchke and Westcott said the woman was Miss La void Clark. She related that on previous occasions she had heard someone on her porch and .had missed articles from her house. When she heard steps on the porch last night, she fired twice, Westcott said. A short time Wlttchke appeared at a hospital ..r treatment of a bullet wound. , "Wlttcke said he was picking up an apple but wo think there la more to It than that," said Westcott. No chnraes have been filed. 1935 TURKEY MARKET FAR AHEAD OF 1934 SALEM. Aug. 14. (AP) The 1935 turkey market for Oregon birds in creased 385,963 pounds over the aale for 1034, the annual report of the turkey growers association will show, the state department of agriculture announced today. The report, which will state that 82,886 birds weighing 1,377,937 pounds were marketed last year, will be presented at the annual meeting of the association to be held at Cor vallis August 25. The annual summary likewise will I show an Increase In membership In1 the " association from 970 to 1,102, and a reduction In. packing costs from 1.19 cents a pound to 1.03 cents. (IP) A record unique In the history of La Soclete des 40 Homms et 8 Che vaux, American Legion, was estab lished here during the 15th annual grand promenade of the Oregon grand volture 165 of Mtdford. The 67 members of the volture have received 1937 membership ' cards, a membership In excess of that of the past year. The cards have been re ceived from national headquarters in Indianapolis,' Ind and were exhibit ed here. This Is the first time such an accomplishment has been reported. Usual procedure Is to place the first 50-odd cards at the disposal of na tional officers, Including the chem lnot national and his alternate from each state. These are Issued when the Individual officers remit their dues for the coming year. In the big convention parade last night the Medford M40 et 8" train and supporting contingent of south ern Oregon voyageura was one of the most popular features along the line of march. Louis Sauers of Grants Pass, as a hula dancer, won applause as he danced upon the roof of the local bx car. The official "wreck" of the convention, which waa staged last night by southern Oregon vol ture, was attended by hundreds of voyageura from all parts of the state and many candidates were Initiated into the occult and foreign customs of "La Societe." This was the first time southern Oregon volture No. 165 has ever been given the honor of putting on the annual "wreck" of the "40 et 8." Thirty-five pieces of equipment answered a three-alarm call shortly before 3:00 a. m. The fire woe ex tinguished several hours later, being confined to the fourth and fifth floors.
