PAGE SEVEN PUN IS ADOPTED Flying Bride Rescued TY JUDGE I BROTHERS BIG FOOD CENTER Main and Bartlett TO SAVE I MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFOKD. ORF.noy. FRIDAY, APRIL 17. mSK. U.S. JUDGE RITTER ON FINALBALLOT (Continued from Page One.) PAROLE (Continued from Pag. One) to the forut wrvlca utrtetent tim ber land along the highway to pre serve the rustic charm of the area. In return the company would be given timber within the national forest east of the Cascade divide, Mr. janouch explained. The area Involved lies along the Crater LaKe highway between Pros pect and the national forest boun dary. It runs along the highway for bout four and a half miles. An effort will be made to attain equal values In the contemplated ex change, Mr. Janouch said. Experts Coming The appraisal will be In charge cf Fred A. Matz of the Portland reg onal office. Two other expert ap praisers, K. L. Wright and George T. Stevenson, will come from the Portland office Monday to get the survey started, Mr. Janouch related. It la understood that the present dans were worked out In washing- ton by forest service officials and E. W. Mersereau, general manager of the Rogue River Timber company, which ha had headquartera In Klam ath Palls. The Crater Lake highway timber tract has been a source of discus slon and a bone of contention since 1932 when various organizations throughout the slate, and especially In southern Oregon, started a cam paign to have the land preserved by the state or the national government Jor Its scenic charms. Proposals Made In Past Various proposals have been made from time to time for the state or lederal government to purchase the tract, or the roadside area thereof, eo that the owner would not have to carry their Investment aa a costly and unprofitable burden. Last fall, Mr. Janouch said, the national forest offered 30,84a for a atrip of the timber land along the titehway-but apparently wie pany did not consider the offer ade quate, for no response waa ever made to it. When It waa reported about six weeks sgo thst the company had old part of Its tract and tnat log ging operation were soon to start, many objections were made and the campaign to preserve the area waa started anew. Organization request ed Oregon senators and representa tives in Washington to Intercede for the preservation of the timber tract along the highway. It waa then, It is understood, that Mr. Mersereau went to Washington in search of an equitable plan whereby the company could surrender the land to a gov ernment agency on some equitable basis. Mr. Janouch waa of the opinion that the present negotiations would be successful. f 5T ; W , i - ' ' I ! Imme diately challenged the final vote, making a point of order that Rltter oouVd not under the law be con victed of an "omnlbua" count when he had been declared Innocent of the charge separately. Austin contended such conviction. If upheld, would be "monstrous." Senator Robinson, the Democratic leader, held Austin waa not in order when he began a legal argument and Senator Plttman D., Nev.) who was presiding, upheld Robinson. Plttman then ruled Austin's point was not well taken and Austin eat down. Plttman said the lart article charged "general misbehavior" and was a separate count In Itself. Rltter Unmoved. Rltter. who sat throughout the voting near the vloe-preaident's ros trum, apparently waa unmoved by the decision. The senate rejected unanimously a proposal that Ritter be disbarred for life from holding any "position of trust or honor." Rltter walked slowly from the chamber. Removing a wrapper from cigar he remarked: "I have nothing to say. God, you can see why X have nothing to say. I'm going back to Florida. He shook his head wearily as he made this comment to reporters. Senators McNary and Stelwer of Oregcn voted for Judge Rt iter's acquittal. W. W.
