Sumner, and In the follow ing few weeks has endeared himself to thousands of oregonlsns through his sermons and addressee. In the first six weeks after assuming the duties of bishop he delivered sixty- one sermons and addresses. About three weeks ago the bishop made a hurried swing through the western portion of his diocese, mak ing Informal calls upon about eight parishes, Mediord being among tne number. He delivered a mid-week evening sermon at St. Mark's to capacity assemblage and those who had the pleasure of meeting him and Ustnlng to his address extended con gratulations to the convention that both wisely and fortunately selected Rev. Dagwell as the new bishop. The membership of St. Mark's ex tends a hearty welcome to all who wish to attend next Sunday's ser vices. BASEBALL LEAGUE MEETING CALLED A meeting of bsseball manafrers and presidents from Klamath Falls, Grants pass, Olendale. Ashland, Med ford, Weed and Yrcka, will be held at the Llthla hotel In Ashland, Thurs day night at 8:30, for the purpose of discussing- the advisability of forming a southern Oregon -north em California league this year. The meeting has been called by Poke Nlnlnger, president of the league last year. Although Qrants pass and Klamath Falls have already formed teams and are now practicing regularly, little Interest has been displayed to date In the getting either Ashland or Med ford baseball conscious. (P) Al Spina took another large step toward featherweight honors last night by knocking out hard-hitting "Tuffy" Plerpont of Oakland, Cel., In the sixth round of a scheduled 10-round fight Spina had the worst of it early In the battle, losing the tint four rounds. In tht fifth he bored In savagely and had Plerpont stretched out on the canvas at the bell. The referee had counted to seven. "Tuffy" came back for the sixth snd mixed It up furiously, but a hard right to the solar plexus and a left to the chin sent him down for the 10-count. Spina weighed 123, Plerpont 118, Frankte Galluccl, 123, Portland, won a decision in a fast 10-rounder with "General" Pedllla, 130, San Francisco. Pedllla took a brief count In the aeventh. I ILL START -SOON E VALLEY The tournament and handicap committee of the Rogue Valley Golf club, appointed the first of the week by President C. J. Semon, met In special session thta morning to draw up plans for the first tour nament of the year, to be held In the n tar future. The tournament, the annual president's cup with medal play, wlU be over 86 holes, the first 18 to be played on or befoie Sunday night, April 18. The final 18 holes must be shot on or before Sunday, April 20. The committee advised that all those entering the tournament must n- port to Pro D. Mcpherson at ' the club before going out. The next tourney, with details not yet completed, will be the an nual spring handicap event. The complete, revised handicap list, brought up to date by the commit tee, will be published tomorrow. The first round of the handicap is to be played on or before April 26, with match play to continue for approximately five weeks. The committee Is made up of Harry McMahon, A. F. Mansfield, and Robt. (TV- Ray Mangrum of Los Angeles held first prize money In the second an nual Wlldwood Oolf club's open to day, but he had to work extra holes to win It. Leonard Dodson of Pemblne, Wis., forced him Into a playoff when he overcame M antrum's six-hole lead at the three-quarter mark yesterday. His gsme rally pulled him Into a tie at 204 for the 72 boles. A nine-hole playoff was agreed upon, but both finished with 42 'a after a ragged showing. In the tenth, ; Mangrum steadied to score a par four, while Dodson missed a five-foot putt to lose the match, title and W00 first prize money. He toot second money of 4226. TIGER MTtOSSERS CLASH WITH PHOENIX The Medford high, school baseball team is playing its Initial game of the season this afternoon, meeting the Phoenix high school nine m a prac tice session at the high school field here at 9:30. On Saturday the local nine tangles with the Weed high school here, and on Sunday they cross bate with the old timers of the city in an exhibition game. Russell Achlson. Junior high school mentor, has been drafted to service at the helm of the Senior nine so that Head coach Bill Bowermen can de vote bla time to track snd spring football. Several policemen gave blood trans fusions and sawid the mother of four children, Mrs. Pearl Hunt, 25, of ores ham. She returned home, covered from double pneumonia.
