I earn to talk to 70a about iris.- "Ii Iris all 70a hava to talk to mt about, attar all thess yean. Col lean?" It bad been a lore-name. Irli, standlug at fhe door with her brother and Morgan, knew that, and felt aa It the war eavesdropping. But Dncle W1U bad forgotten everything but the fact that after twenty reara be waa aeelog a worn- an he bad Irli knew It now nerer, In bla gentle, romantlo way atopped lorlng. Josephine Roea'i face broke up suddenly Into convulsed lines. Tbe smooth massaged Touthfulnesa went; In Its place came a haggard youth aba waa Ilka a ravaged girl. Her blunt-fingered capable hands wrenched themselves. Then she stiffened, steadied. Bhe too had for gotten ber young people at the door. Iris turned, self-conscious for those who were not self-conscloui for themselres, and found that Owen and Morgan bad gone. Then waa a small room at the stairhead, glassed In: half conservatory, ball sewing room. She leaned her head back. Jes. They wera there, wits tbe doora closed; talking pleasantly enough. It seemed. That was all t: the good anyway. . . . "And you can reproach me now!' Josephine was saying furiously, standing over the bed where Dncli Will lay. propped wltb pillows, bli thin cheeks flushed, his bands play ing nervously with th edges of bli gray dressing-gown. "I can give yon everything you should have, and I will With me. you should mak the sort of marriage that la right for yon." ' Owen's words bad almost made ber say an eager yes: but Phlna'a were so detached and cool that something In her shivered away for a moment. The orchestra waa play ing a tripping dtnca of Dellbes'; the chatter of groups around them, the hurry of waiters, went on. After all, to go away from people who were fond of her . . . Phlna didn't say anything about love. "Do yon want me because you like me?" Irli said, stumbling a little. Phlna smiled. "You foolish ohlld, who wouldn't!" "It's wonderful It's like a fairy tale," sbe said. "But I can't say yes this minute. May I tell you tomorrow?" "Of course you may," Phlna said. But ber air said that It was set tled. "1 have to telephone New York now," ah added. "Walt for me In th lobby, when you finish." "She keeps the shop tied to a tele phone wire," said Owen. "Never a detail gets out from under Pblna'a hand." "She's wonderful and Isn't ah generous!" Owen did not anawer for a mo ment. Then with a visible effort. he begun to talk. "Sbe Is wonderful. And she Is generous. But she never gives with out some prospect of return. I'm being disloyal to her, but you're my own sister. I want you because you're young and kind and human and belong to me. Phlna baa some reason, I'm afraid, beyond all that It may be merely to pay off Aunt Ella, whom she baa never forgiven and never will. Come, anyhow. Iris, I need you like the dev 111 But don't take Phlna for a romantlo or you'll be dlsappolhted." "Why," said iris, wide-eyed. "If there's something I could do tor her to pay ber back, I'd feel bet tor about golngl It's such a lot to luko!" Owen said no more. WHEN ah returned horn aba ran upstairs, happy, excited, to show herself. "Isn't my balr nice tbls way? The rlnga are kept In abapa with brll llautin so tbey can't com out! I don't look like a wblsk-brooml And see my shoes and my nails!" She showod the pointed pink-tipped lin gers, the smart sudds shoes and gloves, the dusky hair thinned and ehaped and polished, outlining ber living, lovely young head. "Nothing anybody could do to It would mak you anything but pretty," aald Dncle William. "I sup pose that's the way girls should look now." "She's been taking you up Into an exceedingly high mountain," Morgan aald bitterly from the little table by tbe window where be bad been at work. It waa too much, on top of tbls radiant, wonderful dayl "It's not your affair aa tar aa I can aee," Iris told him with mors of anger than sbe bad shown since their first days together. Before be could answer there was a rap on the half-open bedroom door. "May we com In?" said Aunt Phlna'a cool loud voice. Unci Will sat up. a light on bis face that transformed him for th moment Into a young man. "Joale, my dear!" He held his hands out. There vas no answering light on the face of th tall woman wbo cam toward him. She smiled brightly, mechanically, as something told Iris she hat. been doing (or years, "I'm sorry to sea you so 111," she said conventionally. II stared up eagerly at tbe arti ficially smooth face, the set smile. "Do you know, my dear, you look no older now than you did then? 1 sup pos" his thin sensitive fac flushed as sh took his band "1 look an old man to you." "You look as If you'd had a bard life. Not greatly changed otherwlae. "T wanted to marry you, Josle," b said. "I lored you, I'v neve) loved anybody else." "And what good did that do? Wbai did you do to pro 1 It?" eh da manded. "You asked m to marr you you that were twice my aga with twice my knowledge of life But w bad to wait because youi brother Lawrence waa a genlna save th mark." "And so my fine genius comet with you to the little house where Jean and I were working; young girls who asked nothing but to earn a living and be let alone, and tbe first 1 know he. that you bad to help support because be waa a genlua a genlus.when he'd done nothing to show It at forty, walks off with my little sister to Phila delphia and marrlea her. "He didn't atop tor thoughts of duty. No, with all bla good looks and bis selfish charm and bla clever talk and bis grand ways, be sweeps off little Jean who would always be lieve anything sh waa told, and love anybody for a kind word, the poor little pretty thing. And still you persuaded .me to wait, and still I waited. "You war too well-bred and proper to marry ma and let me go on working, and there wasn't the money to support Lawrence and Jean and tor your marrying too. You loved, me, but your duty to every body on Ood's earth cam before me or your sister Ella and your brother Lawrence had you so cowed and hypnotised that you thought so." Her vole had risen; It swept on Ilk a flood. She cam closer, and stood above th bed with clenched hands. "I eien went to Philadelphia to work, so that your poverty stricken fine family wouldn't be shamed by a well-brought-up girl earning an honest living young af fectionate fool I was!" "Josl. Jos!, if you hsd only ax plained some of this to me, long ago I" "Explained It to you! Didn't I say It and scream It tor Ave years? But what could two girls do against three middle-aged people who were all aet on way, and two of them selfish? For I'll say for you, Billy, you wer never selfish for yourself, only for Lawrence." H held out a thin band. Sbe pushed It away. "Never mind." Sh bad gone back to her bard, smooth, Kngllih ac cented vole. "W'r through with all that, you and I, and I auppos I should thank you. It was th date of you and your sister Ella that drove mi along. To where I've got. To wbera I'll be. . . ." Sh caught her breath. He sat up In bed and caught ber hands. "Josle. Josle, I'm sorry. Ws wer selfish w wer cruel. But" Bh laughed suddenly, harshly. Jerking her banda away. Edison had employed cotton fibre, bamboo and ather vegetable fibres with varying success, and It seemed likely that some such material would be perfect for his light. This was before tungs ten was proven to be ideal material. Edison sent McOowan Into South America In search of mine thing that would prove be'tter than the fibres at his command.
