POTSDAM, April 9. A passionate
love of the outdoor lire has made
Crown Prince Wllhelm, the former
Kaiser's eldest son, the youngest
looking man of almost 55 In Berlin
society. Were It not for the silver
grey hair which adorns his Interest
ing, Frederick -the-Great-1 Ike head,
nobody would think of him as a
quinquagenarian.
His slim, supple, athletic figure
Is that of a young man In the
twenties; hla tanned, unruffled face
gives evidence of an ever youthful
constitution.
When he appears at a public func
tion In the smart uniform of a
death-head hussar or the dapper,
tailless full dres of a naval regi
ment, he Is easily the center of at
traction, barripg not even popular
leaders of the third relch.
Hailed by People.
If perchance his dashing Mercedes
limousine gets into a traffic Jam and
the people rco at the steering wheel
the man who seemed destined to
rule a mighty nation, cheers go up
and men and women in every walk
of life hall him.
Often he can be seen with the

or In philharmonic hall. Immediately
there ta a craning of necks and
rapidly the message spreads, "the
Imperial family is here tonight."
"I love the uotdoor life," the
crown prince replied to a question
as to hla hobbles. "X am fond of
hiking, hunting and outdoor sports
generally. I used to play tennis a
great deal, but more lately have
taken to golf. Only thla morning I
put In two hours at the Wannsee
golf club. I don't think one can do
both tennis and golf successfully,
so I've given up tennis in favor of
golf."
Prefers English Novels.
Bo fond Is the crown prince of
the English language that he rather
prefers English novels to those in
any other language. "Rudyard Kip
ling," he said, "James Oliver Cur
wood, wbo Is a personal friend of
mine and who visited us with his
family at Cecllienhof, and Laurie Y.
Ersklne are some of my favorites. X
also love historical novels and ex
poses, such as Duff Cooper's Talley
rand "'My German readings are chiefly
concerned with works on military
and historical subjects."
American humor, both In novels
and In talkies, appeals to the crown
prince greatly.
Said he: "I think such pictures as
'Ruggles of Red Gap or It Hap
pened One Night,' or 'His Last Com
mand' are simply priceless. I consider
Clark Gable a marvelous actor. Only
recently I saw him again in 'China
Seas'."
Himself a violin player, the Ho
henzollern heir la very fond of mu
sic. His favorites are the three Ger
man "B's" Bach, Beethoven, and
Brahma, after whom comes the Ital
ian Puccini.
Prom early manhood the crown
prince has taken a deep Interest in
the theater, which he regards as one
of the most Important manifesta
tions of life and barometers of cul
ture. Problem plays which give an
insight into human nature and psy
chology have great fascination for
him.
It goes almost without saying that
a man who once was so close to the
throne and who was sent on repre
sentative missions to different coun
tries by his Imperial father should
take a deep Interest In International
politics. He Is mindful of the fact,
however, that a different regime
from a monarchist Is In the saddle
In Germany, and that any move on'
his pare In the way of airing his
views for publication might be mis
interpreted. He Is therefore keeping
his own counsel on questions of
German politics, both domestic and
foreign.

nounced today thai a small, auto
matic radio balloon, sent up from
the Novosibirsk meteoropollgal sta
tion, had reached a height of more
than 26 miles.
They declared this to be the high
est that a man-made Instrument
ever has ascended.
The exact altitude registered on
the Instruments of the balloon,
which did not carry passengers, was
42.200 meters 138,451.16 feet.

near death after their planes crashed
in mid-air today near Roosevelt field
at Mtneola, N. Y. Their Identities
were not known.

Juggling Would End
PORTLAND, Ore,, April 9.
A movement to put befure the voters,
through an Initiative petition, a pro
posal to stagger the terms of state
game commissioner with the argu
ment that It will eliminate political
juggling will be started soon.
Application for a ballot title will
be filed with the secretary of state
In a few days, Ed Averlll, chairman
of the Oregon state conservation
council, said.
The measure provides five-year
rotating terms for the five commis
sioners, with the term of one to ex
pire each year.
They would be appointed by the
governor upon recommendation by
various sportsmen, wild life group
and others designated by the legis
lature. Once appointed, they could
be removed only by recall or for
conviction of malfeasance.
