(A) Inheritance taxes totaling 12.700.000 have been collected by the state treasurer's of fice during the past five years, a re port Issued by Treasurer Rufus C. Holman today showed. (Continued from rage One) said he considered McOroarty had "abused his congreAsional privities." Chairman BeU (D.. Mo.) and Rep resentatives Holllster (R . O.) and Hoffman (R., Mich.) disagreed. They said If the copies were distributed free McOroarty was within his rights. "Pfl per cent" statement by James R. Sullivan, committee counsel, but did agree the paper carried "soma patent medicine advertising." Sullivan read to the high amuse ment of the committee and specta tors a series of advertisements from the Townsend Weekly which made claims to remarkable cures. Clements, who said the weekly's receipts were from S00 to 600 a week in Marco 1935. testified he op posed Insertion of some types of ad vertising "because they were offens ive" but denied the assertion of Representative Dltter (R.. Po.) that Dr. P. E. Townsend, aa a medical man, Indorsed any of the cures advertised. Townsend l'es Tablets It ms brought out In later ques tioning that Dr. Townsend was a user of a certain tablet advertised In the weekly. Sullivan read a part of a letter from Clements to C. D. Cert, adver tising manager of the weekly. In which he said "I wonder how much they would pay us If we said Dr. Townsend la never without the tab lets and attribute his ability to speak long and often to them." Clements testified, inder question ing, he was merely attempting levity and the letter was facetious. Ha add ed, however, that Dr. Townsend did use the tablets In question. The Clements letter further said he himself had never taken sny of the tablets, but that Dr. Townsend "says the tablets have cured me of every thing and eat them by the handa- ful." All In Fun 'Just for fun." Sullivan read the letter. "I'll run one with a naked woman In It." Clements again said the letter was facetious" and that human forms were never permitted In any advertis ing. He added that he had ordered all advertisements referring to "glands, rejuvenation, and get mar ried at 120, and enjoy life at forty" removed from the paper. Sullivan developed through ques tioning that Clements and Dr. Town- send did not see eye to eye on this Issue but denied It whb e, fundamen tal cause of their rlf ht which resulted In Clements' resignation. "Does Dr. Townsend attribute his economic Ideas to these tablets," ask' ed Representative Cavanaugh (D., N. Y.)? "Oh. no," Clements replied. He said the paper owned by him self and Dr. Townsend bad a clrcula tlon at that time of about 100,000. Clubs pay 3 Cents Copy Under questioning by Sullivan, It was brought out the papers were charged to Townsend clubs at 3 cents a copy, but there waa no return on any copies. Sullivan opened today's questioning of Clements with an inquiry into events In connection with the In cor poration of the Prosperity Publish ing company, publisher of the Town- send National Weekly. The weefcly, Clements said, was sent out to clubs on the order of some in dividual member. Sullivan's questions disclosed that Townsend area man- agers receiver a one cent "cut" out of the three cents charged by the Prosperity publishing company. Clements testified Representative McOroarty (D., Calif.) ordered 3,500 copies of his bill embodying the Townsend plan, from the government printing office. He said these copies were distributed free to Townsend clubs and that McOroarty was relnv bursed for the cost of printing and the regular charge paid. Representative Oaveesn (T., ri. T.) PRODUCTION PRAISED AT By Porothy Iru,tt That there may be no retrret for bavin? mlsaed a truly outstandlnft dramatlc production, attention Is acaln called to the presentation of Eugene O'Neill's famous play. "Em peror Jones." on the nights of April 3 and 4, st the Southern Oregon Normal school In Ashland, under the direction of Prof. Angus L. Bowmer. Aftrr witnessing a dress rehearsal. one is convinced tlijSt this is a dra matic and artistic treat seldom af forded lovers of the drama In a small community. It might well be a per formance by a playhouse of cosmo politan proportions. The fantastic Jungle scenes, un usually difficult to design and stage convincingly, especially with the lim ited budget available, have been cre ated with ama7Jng success by Mrs. Bowmer. whose artistry slways plays a great part In these play produc tions. Hlfh praise Is In store for the work of Bob Bteadman In the title role of Emperor Jones, a role calling for the depiction of a wide scsle of emotions. The Cockney accent of the charac ter. Smlthers, so difficult to repro duce, has been adroitly mastered by the talented actor-prod cer. Professor Bowmer. who. with the presenatlon of this play, demonstrates unmistak ably the long strides he has taken toward pre-eminence in his profes sion.
