HiUfc,iiiiii,.m.L. PAOE RTX MEDFORD MAIL TRTBUXE, MED FOUR OREflQNT, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25. 1936. THROUGH THE WINDOW PANE By GLUYAS WHUAM3 STRANGE AS IT SEEMS By JOHN HIX Tor further proof address the author. Inclosing atamped envelope for reply, Reg. TJ. B. Pat Off. Chapter 44 FROM ROGER TT was torn weeka later. A FranWe had Jut received a let ter. It bore the atamp of one o( the leas-known South American repub lics. After reading tt through, the passed It to Bobby. It ran aa follows: Dear Frankle: Really, I congratulate you! Yon and your Naval friend hare ahat terod the plans of a lifetime. I had everything so nicely arranged. Would you really like to hear all about It? My lady friend hai given me away so thoroughly (spite, I'm afraid women are In variably spiteful!) that my most damaging admissions won't do me anv further harm. Besides, I am starting Ufa again. Roger Basslnr ton-ffrench la dead. I fancy I've always been what they call a "wrong 'un." Even at Ox ford I had a little lapse. I fell In wlt'a Moira and her lot fairly soon. She was the real thine. She was aif accomplished criminal by the time ahe was fifteen. When I met her things were getting a bit too hot for her. She and I liked each other. We decided to make a match of It, but we'd a few plans to carry through first. To begin with, sbe married Nlch' olson. By doing so she removed her self to another world, and the police lost sight of her. Nicholson was Just coming over to England to atart a place for nerve patients. Sbe waa still working In with her gang In the dope business. Without knowing it, Nicholson was very use ful to her. I bad always had two ambitions. I wanted to be the owner of Merro- way, and I wanted te command an Immense amount of money. I bad to have money. Moira made aeveral trips across to Canada to "see her people." Nich olson adored her and believed any thing she told him. Most men did. Owing to the complications of the drug business sbe travelled under varloua names. She waa travelling aa Mrs. Templeton when she met Savage. She knew ail about Savage and hla enormous wealth, and she wont all out for him. He was at tracted, but he wasn't attracted enough to lose his common sense. However, we concocted a plan. You know pretty well the story of 'that. The man you know as Cayman acted the part of the unreeling hus band. Savage was Induced to come down and stay at Tudor Cottnge more than once. The third time be came our plans were laid. I needn't go Into all that you know It. The whole thing went with a bang. Moira cleared tbe money and went off ostensibly abroad In reality back to Btaverley and the Orange. In the meantime I waa perfecting my own plans. Henry and young Tommy had to be got out of the way. I had bad luck over Tommy. A couple of perfectly good acci dents went wrong. I waan't going to fool about with accldenta in Hen ry's case. I Introduced him to mor phia. He soon became an addict. Our plan waa that he should go to the Orange for treatment and should there either "commit sui cide" or get hold of an overdose of morphia. AND then that fool Carstalrs be gan to be active. It seems that Baraga had written him a line on board ship mentioning Mrs. Tem pioton and even enclosing a snan ahot of her. Carstalrs wont on a shooting trip soon afterwards. When ho came back from the wilds and heard the news of Savage's death and will, he was frankly In credulous. He was certain that Sav age wasn't worried about his health and didn't bollove be had any spe cial fear of cancer. Savage was a hard-headed buslneas man. and Car stalra didn't believe lie would leave a vast sum of money to her and the rest to charily. Carstalrs came over here deter mined to look Into the business. He begnn to poke about. And straightaway we had a piece of bad luck. Some friends brought blm down to lunch, and be saw a picture of Moira on the piano and recognised It as the woman of the snapshot that Savncjo had sent him. He went down to Chipping Somcr ton and started to poke about there. 1 went down to Chipping Somer ton after him. He failed to trace the cook Rose Chuillelgh. She'd gone to the north, but he tracked down Evans, found out her married name and started off for Marchbolt. Things were getting serious. If Evans identified Mrs. Templeton and Mrs. Nicholson a3 one and the same person, matters were going to become difficult. I decided that Carstalrs bad got to be suppressed. He was making a serious nuisance of himself. Chance came to my aid. I waa close behind him when the mist came up. I crept up nearer and a sudden push did the Job. I didn't know what incriminating matter he might have on blm. How ever, your young Naval friend played into my bands very nicely. I was left alone with the body for a abort time. He had a photograph of Moira he'd got it from the pho tographers, presumably for Identifi cation. I removed that and any let ters or identifying matter. Tben I planted the photograph of one of the gang. All seemed to have gone off sat isfactorily. And then your friend Bobby upset things. It seemed that Carstalrs had mentioned Evans and Evans waa actually In service at tbe Vicarage. I admit we were getting rattled by now. Moira Insisted that be must be put out of the way. We tried one plan, which failed. Then Moira weni down to Marchbolt In the car. 8b seised a chance very neatly slipped some morphia into Bobby't beer when he was asleep. But the young devil didn't succumb. Thai was pure bad luck. And Imagine the. shock thai Moira had when she was crecpinp out to meet me one evening am' came face to face with Bobby. Sh' recognized him at once she'd hat a good look when he was asleci that day. Then she realised that li wasn't she whom he suspected, am' she rallied and played up. THE position was serious. We'd got the money, but you and Bobby were a menace. You'd got your suspicions fixed on the Grange It may Intorest you to know thai Henry didn't commit suicide. I killed him! When I was talking tc you in the garden, I saw there was no time to waste and 1 weni straight In and saw to things. The airplane that came over gave me my chance. I went Into tbe study, eat down by Henry, who was writing, and said: "Look here, old man " and shot hlml The noise ol the plane drowned the sound. Thon I wrote a nice affecting let ter, wiped off my fingerprints from the revolver, pressed Henry's hand round It and let It drop to the floor. I put the key of the study In Henry's pocket and went out, locking the door from the outside with the dining-room koy.whlch fits the lock. I won't go Into detnlls of the nonl Utile squib nrrnngement in the chimney which was timed to go oil four mlnutoa later. Everything went beautifully. You and 1 were lii tho garden together and heard the "shot." A perroet suicide. Where Moira really showed her mettle was at the Cottnge. She real ised from the noise upstairs that I'd been knocked out, and she quick ly Injected a large dose of morphia Into heraolt, and lay down on the bed. After you all went down to tele phone sbe nipped up to the attic and cut me free. Then the morphia took effect and by the time the Doctor arrived she waa genuinely off In a hypnotlo sleep. But all the same her nerve was going. She pretended to to up te London nnrslng home. Instead she hurried down to Marchbolt nnd met you on the dooratopl Then ber one Idea was to get you both out of the way. Her methods wore crude to the last degree, but 1 be lieve she'd have got away with It. Moira would have got away back to London and Inln low In a nursing home. With you and Bobby out of the way the whole thlnjr would hare died down. But you spotted her and she lost ber head. And then at the trial she draggod me Into ltl I'erhapa I waa getting a little tired of her. , . . But I had no Idea that shs knew It. You see, she had got the money my money! Once I had married her I might have got tired of her. I like variety. So here 1 am starting life aguln. . And all owing to you and that extremely objectionable young man Bobby Jones. Hut I've no doubt I shnil make good! Your affectionate enemy, the bold, bad villain of the piece, ROGER HASSINGTON FFHKNCII. Tomorrow. Frankit and Bobby a vtry Int. rt. ting d.ciHon. I WAYS.
