'-Rose of the Rancho." which introduces Gladys Swarthout to motion picture fans, la In reality an outdoor adventure drama with a imwlral background. John Boles is co -a tarred. The story li set In the old Cali fornia town of Monterey, with M:ss Swarthout as the kvehr daughter cf the Spanish Don Castro wealthy land holder whose Spanish land grants are being wrested from him by unscTtip'i lous desperadoes. Bullets are the onlj law and the Dons organize their vigilantes to defend themselves against the invasion. Led by an unknown, the vigilantes ride at night In their fight to retain their vast holdings. Boles, a secret service agent sent out by the federal government to attempt an amicable settlement of the bitter dispute, finds himself, through a mistaken bit of heroism, aligned on the side of the land grabbers and In love with the beau tiful "Rose of the Rancho." How he finally solves his problem forms trio climaxing thrill of tbe picture. Of course music with such great singing stars as Swarthout and Boles in leading roles plays a very Import ant part In the story, but It la the modern type of song and not oper atic arias. Included among the num bers are "If I Should Lose You." "Thunder Over Paradise" and "Little Rose of the Rancho." Charles Bickford, Willie Howard, Herb Williams. Grace Bradley and H. B. Warner have featured roles In ths supporting cast. James Cagney, Pat O'Brien Starring In Craterian Hit 'Ceiling Zero," which was shown for the first time locally at the Cra terian theater yesterday, is one of the most thrilling and glamorous air romances screened. It co-stars that Inimitable' team, James Cagney and Pat O'Brien, In troduces a charming new leading lady In June Travis and offers an exceptionally large all star cast In support. Cagney, O'Brien and Stuart Erwln have the roles of three flying war buddies who have turned to com mercial aviation. Cagney Is the devil-may-care, stunting. Irresponsible member of the trio, with O'Brien aa the sii per Intend en t of the flyers and Erwln as a somewhat steadier' pilot than Cagney. Jimmy is also given to making love to every pretty girl he see, which lands him tn plenty of trou- Sble. He probably has given the beet performance of his career tn this characterisation. Be la not entirely frivolous, however, for he rise on the supreme occasion to a heroic deed by taking the place of his rival In love on a flight he knows will end In death. Jimmy manages to mix his quaint humor with thrill ing action in a way that either keeps one laughing or holding the breath. Pat O'Brien Is excellent as the somewhat more sober air superin tendent, but he lends no Inconsid erable humor to the comedy situa tions. June Travis does a commend- WSR Jackie Cooper Hairs-breadth escapes, tnriiis of running automobile battles and air plane pursuit, the amaulng clever ness of a dog, and the comradeahln between three of the most; oddly-assorted characters ever thrown to gether are to be found in "Tough Guy." new drama of the govern- able piece of work aa the pretty air hostess, who Is engaged to one pilot and is fascinated by another.
