Inclosing stamped envelope for reply. Reg. V. S. Pat Off. in y . v -r SYNOPSIS t Bobby Jonea, poa ing aa Frankie Derwent'e chauj' feur. 1mt hne arrived at Btaverley with Frankie'a big car. Frankie U Haying with the Baaainaton frenchea, and euapecta Roger liaaa inntOH'ffreneh ol murder. But even more the auapccta Dr. Ntcholaon, who runt a drug cure nearby, ana ahe haa told Bobby to find out all he can about the doctor in the vil' lage. A little vuxalrd aa to how a chauffeur ehould behave, Bobby nevertheleae ta trying hie wtlea on the landlord. Chapter 22 LOVELY LADY "TERY nice little place you have here, Mr. Askew," aald Bobby kindly and condescendingly. "Very nice and snug." Mr. Askew expressed gratification. "Merroway Court the only big place In the neighborhood?" "Well, there's the Orange, Mr. Hawkins. Not that you'd call that a place exactly. There'a no family living there. No, It had been empty for years until this American doctor took It" "An American doctorT" "That's It Nicholson his name Is. And If you ask me, Mr. Hawkins, there are some very queer goings on there." The barmaid at this point re marked that Or. Nicholson gave her the shivers, he did. "Goings on, Mr. Askew?" said Bobby. "Now what do you mean by goings on?" Mr. Askew shook hie bead darkly. "There's those tl ere that don't want to be there. Put away by their rela tlons. 1 assure you, Mr. Hawkins, the nioanlngs and the shrieks and the groans that go on there you wouldn't believe." "Why don't the police Interfere?" "Ob, well, you see, lt'a supposed to be all right. Nerve cases, and such like. Loonies that aren't so very bad. The gentleman's a doctor and It's all all right, so to speak" Here the landlord burled his face In a pint pot and emerges again shake bis head In a vory doubtful fashion. "Ah!" said bobby In a dark and meaning way. "If we knew every thing that went on In these places . . ." And he too applied him self to a pewter pot. The barmaid chimed In eagerly: 'That's what I say, Mr. Hawkins. What goe on there? Why, one night a poor yo mg creature escaped In her nightgown she was and the Doctor and a coupte of nurses out looking for her." Somebody present said that there was no knowing what went on In places. And someone else said that was right. FINALLY the meeting broke up and Bobby announced his In tention of going for a stroll before turning In, The Orange was, he knew, on the other sid; of the vlUHgi from Morro way Court, so he turned his foot steps In that direction. What he had heard that evening seemed to him worthy of attention. A lot of It could, of course, be dis counted. Villages are usually pre judiced against newcomers, and still more so It the newcomer Is of a dif ferent nationality. If Nicholson ran a place tor curing drug-takers, there would naturally be strange sounds Issuing from It groans anj even shrieks might be beard without any sinister reason for them. But all the same the story of the escaping girl struck Bobby unpleas antly. Supposing the Grange were really a place where people wero kept against their will? A certain number of genuine cases might be taken aa camouflage. At tills point In his meditations Bobby arrived at a high wall with an entrance of wrought-iron gates. He stepped 'p 'o the gates and tried one gently. It was locked. Well, after all, why not? And yet somehow the touch of that locked gate gave him a faintly sin ister feeling. He movcu a little farther along the road, measuring the wall with Ills eye. Would It be possible to climb over? The wall was smooth and high and presented no accommodating crannies. He shook his head. Sud denly he came upon a little door. Without much real hope he tried It. To his surprise It yielded. "Bit of an oversight here," thought Bobby with a grin. He slipped through, closing the door sottly behind him. He found himself on a path lead ing through a shrubbery. He fol lowed the pith, which twisted a good deal. Suddenly without any warning It gave a sharp turn and emerged Into an open space close to the house. It was a moonlit nlaht and the space was bright. Bobby hid stepped full Into the moonlight be fore he could stop himself. S'io was treading very sottly, glancing from side to side with or so It seemed to the watch ing Bobby the nervous alertness of a bunted animal. Suddenly she stopped dead and stood swaying .- though she wou. '. fall. Bobby rushed forward and caught her. Her Hps were white and It seemed to blm that never had ha seen such awful fear on any human countenance. "It's all right," he said reassur ingly In a very low voice,' "It's quit! all right." The girl, for she was little more moaned faintly, her eyelids ball closed. "I'm so frightened," she mur mured. "I'm so terribly frightened.' "What's the matter?" asked Bobby The girl only shook her head ant repeated faintly, "I'm so frightened. I'm so horribly frightened." Suddenly some sound seemed to "I'm to terribly frightened." come to her ears. She sprang up right, away from Hobby. Then ihe turned to him. "Go away," she said. "Go away at onco!" "I want to help you," said Bobby. "Do you?" Sho looked at him for a second or two, a strange searching and moving glance. Then she shook her hoad. "No ono can help me." I can," snld Bobby. "I'd do any thing. Toll me what It Is that frlKhtons you so." She shook her head. "Not now. Oh, quick! They're coming. You can't help me unless you go now. At once nt nco." Bobby yielded to hor urgency. With a whlnpnred "I'm at the An glers' Arms," ho plunged Wk along tin path. Suddenly ho heard footsteps on the path In front of him. Someone was coming along tho path from the littlo dour. Bobby plunged abruptly Into the bushes at the side of the path. A man passed close to Bobby, but It was too dark for tho young man to nee bis fare. When . Inn1 paused Bobby re sumed his retreat. Strange se It seems, you can moke the "round-trip" outlined above and fall to end up at the point from which you started. Explanation of this fact la that the earth Is a sphere and when you start directly north from the equator you start toward the north pole, no matter where on the equator you begin. The north and south logs of the journey will not be exactly parallel, because all lines straight north from the equator converge on the pol. Tho southern extremities of the north and south legs of the trip will there fore be farther apart than the north ern. Hence if you travel 100 miles west before starting south, you will be more than 100 miles went of your starting point when you return to the equator. The final 100 miles east will not return you to your starling point. Washington was the only President who received all the electoral votes, none being cast for any other candi date. But Adams came within one vote of beliui elected unanimously. When It became evident that All Totes would be cast for him, one delegate cast a contrary vote so that the hon or of unanimous election would be slone for Washington.
