FINALLY FOILED
KANSAS CITY. Mo. (UP) It's a
good trick If it works. And it did,
many times, until it was overdone.
Here's how. according to hospital
internes who finally brought it out
in the open: "
An elderly woman, poorly clad, ap
pears late at night In a drug store,
night club or restaurant. She asks the
proprietor for money, lamenting that
she has not eaten for several days. If
he refuses, she walks to the rear ni
the store and draws out a bottle la
beled poison. She drinks it and Sinks
to the floor. - ' -That
brings around the erstwhile
hard-hearted proprietor. He works
frantically to revive her. and does.
She departs with money now that bis
heart has been softened
The hitch came about when tne
woman took too much chloroform
from the "poison" bottle, which Is
Intended to daze the woman but not
to make her unconscious. The in
ternes never found It necessary to
take her to the hospital. The "sui
cide "business went Into a slump.
PORTLAND. Feb. 31. Butter
butterfat and egg quotations remain

Live poultry continued to show a
firm tone with on changes in tne
price list. Receipts of Leghorns con
tinued scent.
: Better weather .condition appeared
somewhat of an aid to marketing of
hothouse rhubarb, although prices
continued below normal. j
Onion market was a trifle softer
locally with a desire on the part of
holders to take profits.. 1
Country - killed meat continued
generally firmly priced. ,
Asparagus was showing reduced
prices with increasing movement out
of San Francisco and Stockton.
Celery market was mixed with a
considerable price range.
Good peaa were selling around 7!ic
lb. with others 5c or less.
A truckload of bulk turnips from
the south relieved the local famine
with sales up to 50c dozen bunches.
A few of the latter that were for-!
merly asked:
How many stars are there on a
quarter? 1
Can progress make a law to put

If a person has seven children,
would he have to pay for public
schools?
