( UP ) One of the oldest and most valuable copies of the Bible In the world the 1800-yeara-old Co- dex Sanaltlcua haa been patched up and rebound to give It a new lease of life In another 500 yeara. The Codex waa bought by the Brlt lah museum from the Soviet govern ment two yeara ago for the record price of $500,000. It waa brought to London in an old tin box wrapped In cotton wool, with Ita pagea tnttercd and crumpled and many of them loose. After alx months exacting work It haa been restored to enable It to withstand the ravages of the next five centuries. The Job of mending and binding the 847 leaves of the Codex was ac pllahed by one of the foremost book binders In this country, Douglas Cockerel, and hla eon, Sydney. Ow ing to the great age of the manu script, each page had to be treated with the most delicate care. The crumpled vellum leaves were straight ened and flattened, one by one, In a special stretching frame, with damp cloths held within an Inch of the pagea to give the necessary damp at mosphere. Weights of one pound each were attached to a device which gave an even pull In every direction. At the same time many of the leaves had to be washed, patched and sewn to. gcther. The first page haa 15 Invisible patchea, which. It Is said, only expert could detect. Many other pages also had to receive a similar mount of "first aid." The patchea were made from tiny scraps of vel lum chosen to match the original vellum on which the manuscript Is written. In addition to the work of patch ing the aheeta, the whole manuscript haa now been bound Into two vol umea with soft-colored polished oak boards and morocco backa. The Co dex la officially recorded in the Brit' lah museum library catalogue as "British museum additional ms. 43720." The Sinai Codex, which la believed to have been written In the fourth century In Egypt, waa discovered In May, 1S44, by the German Biblical scholar, Constantino Tlachendorf, dur- llng a visit to the monastery of St, CatcheTlne on Mount Banal. He found 139 leaves In a waate paper basket which the monka were about to consign to the furnace. The II brarlan told him that two basketfulls had already been consumed. The manuscript, after two yeaa of nego tiation, was eventually given to the Ruaalan government in 1889, which paid the monastery about 0.750 as compensation. As the Pronch empress also held the title of the Countess of Pirrefonds, It Das been decided that this city Is the most suitable place for the museum. It haa been stressed that the aim of the museum Is non -political, his torical and sentimental. Dr. Francois Ferrand haa already collected many objects dealing with the second em pire, the empress, her friends and her court. There are documents dealing with the story of Dr. Thomas W. Evans of Philadelphia, the imperial dentist who saved Empreaa Eugnnle'a life when he a Minted her In escaping to England by way of Deauville. Various Amer ican books, memoirs, and newspaperb dealing with the Imperial court will be Included In the museum. Dr. Ferrand haa a letter written by Empreaa Eugenie's son, the Prince Imperial, while studying at Hand hurst, the British West Point. The young prince begins the letter simply with "My dear papa" and proceeds to tell of his life at the military academy and of various rumors which wore current In London during the early weeks of the Francl-Pruaalan war. The museum will Include an exact copy of the Emperor's dining room and the silverware, porcelain, china and glassea which once were part of the equipment of the last French emperor and his wife. LONDON (UP) Britain's readers are confronted with a literary out put never equalled before. Last year 16,110 books were pub lished In Greet Britain, setting a new high record for book production In these l,ies. It Is doubtful, how ever, whefther anyone succeeded In ploughing hts way through this vaat torrent of literature, since at a conservative estimate. It would nave entailed reading something like 44 books a day throughout the en tire year. Anyhow, those frustrated readers who set themselves the tssk of get ting through the entire output could reflect that the 1936 total of new books was 108 greater than the pre vious year's. For some unexplained reason, however, there was a marked decrease In the activities of pamph let writers In the British Isles, ao that at the end of the year this nggregate output waa 149 down on the 1034 total. Consequently, taking books and pamphlets together. It seems that the output of new literature of all classes registered a net Increase of 43. On the other hand, at least 439 new editions of already published works helped swell the 1035 literary stream but eased the task of those thirsting for strictly new literature. , Strangely enough, the most Inde fatigable readers of the year were the youngsters. At least, -Juvenile books showed the largest Increase with 93 more than In 1934. Biography allowed an tncreaae of 78 and fiction 12. Poetry and drama only Increased by 29 and fine arta by 24. Religious books decreased by 95, law by 55. literature by 43 and medicine by 20. In the face of this outlay of books some Britons have been surprised to learn that In reality this country Is threatened with a Uteary "fam ine," although perhaps not ao much In the immediate future as to ne cessitate any drastic measures to In crease the literary flow. According to expert calculations there haa been an annual Increase during the past 10 years of about 2 per cent In the number of books published. The reading public, however, has in creased at a rate of 15 per cent per annum. This Is said to explain the ever-increasing numbera of new edi tions of old works published every year.
