Capt. Harry O. Armstrong, who at
tained national prominence recently
as a result of a treatise on the physi
cal reactions to a parachute Jump,
will be In charge of the laboratory.
Armstrong aald the laboratory will
attempt to solve problems of safety,
comfort, health and accidents of alti
tude flying.

tain a number of rare instrument
for the lnboratory. The laboratories
at Harvard university have agreed to
supply two of these, e spirometer
and a kymograph.
A spirometer la a small Instrument
which, when breathed Into, collect
gaxes from the lungs. It Is delicately
balanced so as not to alter the analy
ration of the breath and affect Its
composition by pressure. The lnatru
ment will be used to determine the
exact composition of lung gases at
high alltudes, since they change after
Inhalation.
The kymograph ts a recording de
vice used In the pressure ohamber to
determine breathing rate and depth
at high altitudes, blood pressure and
other physical reactions.
Armstrong haa developed a '
breather" whloh will purify the waste
air thrown off by the lung so that
It may be used again. The officer
hold only one-twentieth of the air
Inhaled la absorbed and used and the
remainder la wasted. The '
breather" will purify this for use.
