EIGHT MURDERS 1 SOLVED BY DOG OF BERLIN COPS Med BERLIN (UP) Whit Is aald to be : the best detective -dog In the work, belongs to the dog section of the Ber- : lin police. Thla smart four-legged detective, ( named Schimmel, haa solved eight ! murder cases aa well aa numerous rob- berles, holdups and other crimes. ! The so-called "wonderdog" la 8 ; years old and has been a member of ; the Berlin police force since 1928. In a recent case the dog gave an- other proof of his ability and smart ness when eight other dogs from his ' section had failed. It found the body of a murdered boy concealed about half a meter underground In a thick- j ly wooded forest. The child was a vie-, tlm of the boyklller, Seefeld. j This little "detective" proved his : cleverness to 80 Jurists, among whom were both foreign and German Judg es and attorneys. The Jurists walked over a field to destroy and stamp out , all trace of scent on the dog's trail. I But it took Schimmel less than three minutes to, find the scent, take the: lead again, and find the hidden ob- ! Ject. This dog receives the same food as ' all Its fellows, except that after each gallant performance it receives a bag full of Pfefferkuchen. its favorite delicacy. Schimmel's trainer Is Paul Boettger. the chief of the dog-detective section. . Boettger Is the oldest police-dog train- tr in the world. i The dog Is entirely white, a rare color for German shepherds, which ' are usually brown, black, or spotted ! black and white. This peculiarity ex- j plains its name Schimmel. which In German means "white horse." 1 The idea of using dogs for detec tive work originated with Herr Laufer, i a former attorney. In 1901, when the town of Schwelm, Westphalia, did not have enough money to employ suffi cient police officers, every policeman on duty was ordered to take & shep herd dog with him as protector. A year later Capt. vonStepbanlts. spread the idea of using dogs in the police force as scouts, trackers, etc. Ever since then, the German shep herd dog has been known all over the world. The best known German shep herd dog was the late Bln-Tln-Tln, the famous movie star. CHIMES FOR 30 YEARS: WILLED I0B FOR LIFE NEWTON, Mass. (UP) Two broth tr have been ringing chimes by bund at St. John's Methodist-Episcopal church here for more than 30 years. Wallace A.. SB. and A. Lester Ship ton, 49. who have been willed the Job for life, summon parishioners to church each Sunday morning and evening with the chimes. All music must be transposed to the key of P because the bells are In that key. In the bell tower there Is a row of nine handles, similar to short wheelbarrow handles. The elder Ship- ton says that to chime, a special kind of stroke Is necessary. One must learn the knack a nappy stroke, so that the striker won't remain against the bell. The brothers believe that much of the beauty of chimes lies In the touch of handling the rods and that ring ing of the bells by hand Is superior to that by electricity.
