Wind Sweeps Snow Band had a low of 28 during the r.'.ght. Despite the rising wind which swept snow Into drifts, all main roads in Deschutes were open. Pendleton had 3Y2 Inches of new snow after a two-below-zero thermo meter reading. At 8 a. m. today the thermometer stood at 4 degrees at Arlington, 15 at Hood River, and 18 at Crown Point. Rome Konds Blocked LA GRANDE, Ore., Feb. 7. (API All eastern Oregon was in the firm grip of & new cold wave today, with some of the main highways blocked by drifted snow and secondary roads generally closed to travel since all equipment was being concentrated on the chief arteries of travel. The old Oregon trail from Pendle ton to La Grande was ope.n but chains were necessary. The road from La- Grnndo east to Baker ""also was open but narrow and slippery, with chains Indicated. Drifts Threatened BEND, Ore,, Feb. 7 (AP) All main highways in central Oregon re mained open to traffic today despite the rising wind which cause snow drifts In places. The road between Bend and Burns was in excellent condition, state highway officers said. Work Is Halted THE DALLES, Ore., Feb. 7. (AP) A driving snowstorm, low tempera tures and a 3harp wind halted work today on a number of mid-Columbia work and construction projects. The mercury dipped to 13 degrees last night. An inch or more of snow covered the ground. East Hard lilt CHICAGO. Feb. 7. (AP) A new torrent of cutting cold raged down both slopes of the Rocky Mountains today as Canada flung open the flood gates of the Arctic again. Sudden chill stabbed Montana. Idaho, Washington and Wyoming when the frozen wave leaped the border and sped south to both east and west. The biting blast carried new numbness for a midwest Just begin ning to thaw, and the nation's north western Icebox saw most cold records shattered. 44 Below In Minnesota The mercury sank to 44 below zero at Bemldjl, Minn. Fresh snow fell and engineers gave up all hope of opening county highways until It thaws. Temperature drops of to 40 de grees were forecast in the new storm's path. Grand Forks. N. D., reported 38 below. Brookings, S. D., 23 below, a figure that broke all records for continued cold. Huron, S. D., has had 26 days of sub-zero weather. Conl Shortage Serious The zero line at 7 a. m. (central standard time) extended from the Canadian border south to the Kansas-Nebraska border and eastward over most of lower Michigan. Snow fell In many states beginning last night. A low pressure area over Colorado caused flurries from the Dakotas to Illinois, and another low spot off the North Carolina coast whitened the east to New York. In the south, more rain and some snow heightened fears of recurrence of floods. Abnormally cold weather continued over most of the nation for the 46th day, and coal shortages grew serious enough to warrant a vote by the United Mine Workers to permit soft coal miners to work on their usual Saturday holiday tomorrow.
