Feb. . (AP) Tb University of Washington bas kotball team left for Seattle today, taking with It four consecutive vlctO' rlee over Oregon's two major schools and every prospect lor retaining Its position as leader ot the Psclllo coast conference's northern division. The Huskies last night defeated Oregon State, defending northern dl vision champions, by virtue of a daz- tllng last-half attack after trailing, 90 to 10. at mid-game, The victory was the Huskies' eighth In conference Dlay this season. Its Oregon Invasion also resulted In an other win. 51 to 83, over the Oregon State five, and two victories. 42 to 83 and 35 to 31, over the University of Oregon at Eugene. Hunt Paterson, playing only the lAst 18 minutes of last night's game, started the rally which gave the Hua- kles the lead and caged one of the two goals which provided the final four-point margin. He was nign acorer with 10 points. The Staters at the last minute switched to a man-io-man defense and had the northerners baffled a food share of the way until Pater son started the fireworks, The road trip ended the first half of the season for the leaders. Four games with Idaho and two each with Washington State and Oregon State remain on the acheduie. Th colorful little Chemawa In dlani. who file Into th city Friday for two ,amo basketball series gainst the Medford high school, oc cupy an unusual position tn the es teem of Medford fans. Relation! b tween the two schools have always been most cordial. Despite the fact that Chcmawa's losses far out-balenos their wins over the Tigers, they are till considered one of the showiest and scrappiest teuns to play here. fllnoe 1031, when Darwin Burgher first took over the reins, the tesnu have clashed every year but one for a two-game series. Previous to that time, Medford and Chemawa had played nearly every year since 1937. filnce 1931, Medford won six games, with the Indiana nsbblng only two- la the first game of the series, the Tigers romped over the warriors, 84- 14, but on the next night scraped out a thin 18-17 victory in a game that was typical of the hot basketball bat tles the two teams usually have. Using short, overhead pass, the In dlsna nearly broke away several times, but had miserable luck with their shot. The same choppy passing Attack will probably be uied again In this series, and Coach Bower man's Med ford team was scheduled to scrim mage against the lue Raiders to night, with the Raiders doing their best to imitate the Indian offensive moves. An In-and-out squad, the chemawa lads have been surprising all year, taking tough games by convincing margins, only to drop their next breather tilt by an equally convinc ing vote. The Ttgera worked out agln lmt night on their driving, rushing of fense, which they will throw agnlnat the ReOkliu In sx. effort to wesr them down before the end of the game. CLASS OF CCC 10 BATTLE FOR ELKS The elsMlent leather tewwere of the Medford CCO district will have their first IBM opportunity to strut their stuff, when they clash on the Elks' club smoker Thursday evening, Feb ruary 13. tnrluded on the cards, which are not yet completely Msem blM, will be many newromeri from the middle west, Including several who led their district before being trsnsfrrred to this sector. Six bouts will he presented, with msny of the old favorites aqusrlng off agalnnt men who arrived with the recent cornlgumrnt of five com panies. Cspt. William C. Ryan, dis trict welfare officer, and Ueut, Roy D. Craft nave promised one of tin That phenomenal Washington bas ketball team, which Is apparently Invincible, would have to come along Just when It looked as though How ard Hobson was going to have one of the best teams In late years at Oregon. Hobby does have a basket ball team that Is potentially great. All of the men are clever ball han dlers, alert on defense and good shots. But pitted against Washing ton they aeem almost helpless. It's too far away from here to be able to Judge accurately, but few Medford people who have seen Oregon play say that there Is Internal strife on the squad. It Isn't apparent on the floor, bnt la In the, locker room, they say. With the fusion of two strong trams snrh aa the SONS squad Hobson took north with him and the Oregon team from last year, strife Is not surpris ing. If the charge Is true, It will prob ably be remedied In the next few weeks. Oregon hss everything to win and nothing to lose from now on, and Hobby la too amart a lad to have any revolutionists on thesqusd. r-hurlr Taylor, the basketball Star who lectured here ana in Asmana Monday, confirms the opinion of hundreds of Oregonlsns that they play a better brand of basketball in fh northwest than thev do fn California. In 1034 Washington, lead- era of the northern division, took two games to one from Southern Cel In the final. Laat year. In an exciting finish, Southern Cal edged out Oregon State In the finals. "Southern Cal had no right to tnkj that aerlea" la the Wav Tay lor gets around to the fact that Southern Cal did lust that. The rea son he gives for the superiority ot the northern division Is: Better con dition, due to the faot that In Ore. iron and Wshlneton the leather dur ing basketball season keeps most would-be athlete inaoors, wnere th h.v. nnthlnff much to do ex- cfnf nlav hsskethall. The nlffhts are cold and the players spend less time running around and tne coia ir Is more eonduatlve to action. Annfnr nnMlhl reason. althOUBh Taylor himself didn't mention it. is the fsct that northernera lose their shirt every time they play n.llfnrnla football teams, and bas ketball offers a bslm to wounded feelings.
