FANDOM RANDOM By Dick Applegate The fact that Stanford's Hank Lul settl, during the course of a recent basketball game, ran up a total of 80 point all by hla lonesome, lias in spired sports writers all along the coast to award Hank the garland for high scoring honors for all time. This diversion of laurels that right ly belong to a prominent Medford physician, so agitated Horace Brom ley of this city that he haa written jo the sport editors of the Oregon Jour nal and the Oregonlan In Portland. pointing out a few of the records es tablished by Dr. E. W. Durno while be was frolicking on the boards at Oregon. Mr. Bromley doeant reveal what dusty archives he plundered for the wealth of staggering Durno records, but his job la so complete that It leaves one with the feeling that he should go to the doctor's office and take off his hat Just by way of hom age. The letter Is quoted herewith: To the Sporting Editor, Oregon Dally Journal, Portland, Oregon. Dear Sir: In looking over today's Sports Section of the Journal, I was sur prised to find In the "Tower Lights" column, credit given to 'Hauk" Lulsettl of Stanford for establish ing a Pacific Coast conference rec ord for Individual scoring. We bas ketball fans of Medford feel in clined to challenge that record, good as It may be, In behalf of a former University of Oregon star who la now a prominent resident of this city. I refer to Dr. Edwin R. Durno "Eddie" Durno to you who was all-coast forward for three years and who Is still remembered as one of the outstanding basket shooters of the Pacific coast . Here's where we feel that the in dividual scoring record should re main In good old Oregon rather than California, On February JO. 1010, while playing forward on the University of Oregon's coast cham pionship team, Durno scored 35 points (10 field goals and 16 tree throws) In a game with Washing ton State College. The preceding ntght he annexed 28 points with 8 field goals and 10 free throws, mak ing a total of 61 points for the two games. Moreover, this series waa cot played on the home court, but at Pullman, Washington. In reviewing the scores of these games, we find that Oregon won the first one 38 to 38 and the second 43 to 27 which means that Durno scored 61 ! points out of the total of 81 made : by the Oregon champs, which Is some record In Itself I Now, to challenge another record mentioned In the same column that of Bobby Oaler of Washington, who scored 176 points In 10 games An excellent record, Indeed, out once again we rise to defend Ore gon's honor with the following facta and figures In- 1910. Eddie Durno scored a total of 244 points In 15 games, an average of 16-26 points per game aa compared with Oaler's average of 11 polnta. Just for good measure, here's another 1 In 1921 when Oregon won the Northwest championship with clean alate, Durno scored a total of 221 polnta In only 13 games or an average of 17 polnta per game! For the benefit of present day I hoop fans, who, perhaps, vision our fellow townsman, Dr. Durno. as huge Viking, 6 feet, 8 Inches In height and wearing a number 13 shoe, let me state that when the above records were made, "Eddie1 was only 5 feat 7 Inches tall and weighed but 125 pounds. This may prove encouraging to the budding hoop aspirants of to day, who are trying to make che weight and height of "Hank" Lul settl. who Is 6 feet, 2 Inches tall, or some of the present Oregon "Grenadiers" who range from a mere 6 feet, 3 inches to 8 feet. 6 Inches In height and wear shoes which rival the famous "Seven league boots.' The basketball fans of Southern Oregon would appreciate your mak ing the above facts public in order that the aforementioned records may be rightfully restored to the State of Oregon which has pro duced some of the finest athletes of all time. Riverside Phone 202 This Chuck Taylor who la to speak at the Senior high school this after noon and at Aahland tonight, knows what he's talking about. He not only knows what he's talking about but he has the happy, and rare, faculty of being able to talk so that people can tell what he's talking about. When he explains a play, nearly everyone can tell what he'a driving at. One of his most pointed observa tions Is this: In the last few years, not a single team has taken the na tional tournament with the use ol a "system. "A system," Taylor says, "handicaps a basketball team. One team that looks like a world beater will come to the tournament, and in- other bunch wll come out of the sticks some place and lick the pants off them." 'The reason Is that the bunch from the sticks don't have to worry about a system. All they have to worry about Is getting more points than the tother guya, and so far they have never failed to do Just that." Ex-Pugilist Held In Auto Fatality PORTLAND, Feb. 3. The Huskies continued their vic tory maroh at the expense of Ore gon's Webfootera last week-end, walking away with a top-aided 43-23 decision Friday and eking out a 35 31 win Saturday, marking up their fifth and sixth straight victories In the league record books. The series ended the season's play between the two teams, with the Huskies making a "grand slam" of the four contests. Oregon State, although the under dogs In tonight's battle, were In a nice spot to dump over the Husky apple-cart. A double win for the Beavers on their own floor would shove them up a half-game ahead of Washington In the standings. At Pullman Saturday night, Ida ho's six -times defeated Vandals up set the dope and hauled Washington State down a notch closer to the cellar with a 33-30 win.
